Each year one of the websites that I contribute to has a Horror Movie Challenge for October. This year I have decided to give it a try. There are no prizes for the one who watches the most, but rather a big "atta boy" for the person who watches the most.
Here is what I have watched so far:
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1 -
1. Salem's Lot (1979) copied from television to DVD-R
2. The Tingler (1959) - William Castle directs Vincent Price in this one.
3. The Thing From Another World (1951) - James Arness plays the monster.
4. The Monolith Monsters (1957)
5. The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) - Michael Rennie IS Klatuu!!!
6. It Came From Beneath The Sea (1955).
7. Nosferatu (1922) - The Silent Classic
8. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) - Another silent classic.
9. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1932)
10 Them! (1954) - Don't blink or you'll miss Clint Eastwood.
Those are the first ten movies I have watched, all on DVD. I am going to spend the weekends really watching a lot of movies because during the day I have other things that may get in the way of my movie watching.
Anyone else trying to watch at least one horror movie a day through Halloween? If not there is also a Christmas challenge coming up December 1, 2011!!!!

Horror movies are not very popular at my house, but at this time of year, I hope to catch a few of the classics like Bela Lugosi in Dracula or Boris Karloff as Frankenstein and The Mummy.

So true Midge. A lot of people find Horror movies just mostly a waste of time, especially in recent years where it seems all it is is an excuse to cover the screen with blood and semi-clothed women. There are a few classics that should be watched and you named three, which are on my list to watch.
Here's what I watched on Sunday:
11. The Uninvited (1944) - Ray Milland stars in this chiller.
12. House of Wax (1953) - Originally filmed in 3-D.
13. House on Haunted Hill (1959)
14. Carnival of Souls (1962)
Monday, October 3:
15. Stephen King's The Mist (2007) - on DVD this film comes in the original color theatrical version and the director's b&w vision. I always watch the black and white version of the film, it just seems to be a better movie.
16. Christine (1983) "Hell hath no Fury like a '57 Plymouth scorned"
17. Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) Bud and Lou at their funniest with Bela Lugosi and a host of Universal monsters.

I was kinda, sorta, hopin' that Larry might get in on this thread. He is quite the horror movie buff, and those he does go to see some turkeys now and then I know that his favorites rank among some of the best of the genre.

Tuesday, October 4, was Hammer Horror day and I picked through my collection and found a lot more than I thought I would. The British Hammer films are among the best of their kind and with stars like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee headlining most of their films you can't go wrong. Here's what I watched:
18. Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
19. The Mummy (1932)
20. Horror of Dracula (1958)
21. Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966)
22. Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1969)
23. Phantom of the Opera (1962) Critically acclaimed as the best remake of this classic story of 'Beauty & the Beast', starring Herbert Lom

My older brother was a horror movie buff, and I went to see Horror of Dracula with him when I was nine years old. It scared the bejabbers out of me!

While horror movies are for everyone's taste, there some movies that can really make your skin crawl. I am not what you would call a horror movie buff by any means, but I do like a movie that checks my pulse once in a while.
Now that Larry has made contact with me, we will see what movies he watches and see what his horror film taste is.
Midge I love your replies, and I think that you really try anything for a chance that you might like it, and that is much appreciated.
You watch and listen to Opera, and that is the one form of music that rubs me the wrong way. So I think we are pretty much even.

Thanks for your kind compliments, Bill! *blush* Yes, I guess I am open to trying new things, though when you get to a certain age [harumph, harumph] you kind of know what your tastes are. Opera isn't easy to like for a lot of people. We always had classical music in the home when I was growing up. I heard opera for the first time when I was too young to know that I wasn't supposed to like it. My father had played in a band and symphony orchestra, but even he hated opera! He would say things like, "Turn off the cat fight" or "What are they yelling about?"

For my Saturday movie watching I chose some movies that I can watch almost anytime of the year, while some are truly "awful", they still are worth the time and effort.
Saturday, October 8, 2011:
34. Snakes (1974)
35. Rattlers (1976)
36. Anaconda (1997)
37. Sssssss (1973)
38. Stanley (1972)
39. Venom (1981)
40. Snakes on a Plane (2006) Blu-ray
No movie watching today or Monday, but then I will get back to it because I have a stretch of days coming that I will not be able to watch many movies at one sitting, so I need to get a head start, which I have.

Believe it or not, I am dreaming about what the next batch of movies will be that I watch in this challenge.
I have some really classic ones for later in the month as we get closer to Halloween. I am really enjoying the challenge this year because I have gone to a lot of time-consuming re-recording from VHS to DVD-RW for a ton of these films. Most of them I got when AMC was a commercial-free station and showed a lot of great movies, like TCM currently does. It brings back the good old days when I am watching one of my Hammer films and I see the "AMC" logo down in the corner of the screen.
The complete original Universal Legacy series of "Frankenstein" will be among those classic films that get watched in the coming days. My Hammer collection is rather small compared to some I have talked with on the internet. But I also have been complemented by others on what I do have in my collection.
With the World Series starting up this week, it is cutting in on my movie watching, which is why I am glad that I got a good jump on it in the beginning.
The only movies that 'might' give me nightmares involve spiders, or roaches or something like that. So I avoid those when I can.
Wait til this weekend, I have a six great Vincent Price horror films to watch Saturday, and then Christopher Lee takes the forefront on Sunday.

Since TC went to bed early tonight, then the girls surprisingly decided to crash early too, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and watch THE STRANGERS (2008), with Liv Tyler. The male lead was English actor Scott Speedman.
The two main characters are basically trapped inside a house with three masked strangers stalking and torturing them. The acting was a bit of a downfall, but the suspense throughout most of the film was good ... until the let-down at the end, when it turned quite a bit cheesy. : P

One of my favorite actors besides Boris Karloff in horror films is Christopher Lee. He has the aura about him that you just have to watch and see what happens. There are a ton of movies that he starred in with Peter Cushing, and I have separated some of my favorites into my Sunday watching.
Sunday, October 23, 2011:
77. The Wicker Man (1973)
78. Castle of the Living Dead (1964)
79. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
80. Face of Fu Manchu (1965)
81. Brides of Fu Manchu (1966)
82. Vengeance of Fu Manchu (1967)

I have a nice large TV tray for whatever I am eating. On weekends we do a lot of "fend for yourself" meals, so I can throw together a little something and grab a bottle of water and I am set.
Also I enjoy learning this retirement thing, so I have a little more time to myself when Zach is at school and Tymber and Bev are off doing what ever it is that they do. Saturday we celebrated Tymber's 4th Birthday, so it was hard to get those six movies in, but I did.
This week is going to be pretty light and easy. I have some very familiar movies to watch, and plan to end the Challenge with a big bang.

"Fend for yourself, " I like that. I wish I could make it a habit at my house. Al is the traditional type when it comes to food preparation; that's a woman's job. :uhuh: Retirement suits me just fine. It takes a while to get used to not working, but life seems to have a way of filling up your time with other things.

With the World Series being postponed because of inclement weather, I chose to switch my movie watching and watched movies originally scheduled today with those scheduled for yesterday.
Wednesday, October 26, 2011:
91. Night of the Living Dead (1968) - the original and the best.
92. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
93. Day of the Dead (1985)
94. The Evil Dead (1981)
95. Funny Games (1997)

I'll never forget seeing Night of the Living Dead (the original) in a movie theater and being haunted by it long afterward. The surprise ending was a huge shock. "They're coming to get you, Barbara!" It was such a low-budget production that, if I remember correctly, some of the actors were also investors.

That is so right, Midge. "Night of the Living Dead" is probably one of the most gruesome movies ever made and it still holds up today.
With the World Series ending on such a high note, I once again had to change my movie watching schedule around, and will be faced with a boatload to watch on Saturday and Sunday.
Thursday, October 27, 2011:
96. Misery (1990) Blu-ray
97. Silence of the Lambs (1991)
98. Child's Play (1988)
Friday, October 28, 2011:
99. The People Living Under The Stairs (1991)
100. The Last House On The Left (1972)
101. Dawn of the Dead (2004 remake) Blu-ray

TC sat and watched Stephen King's IT with me last night. Considering it's hardly frightful at all, I'm glad she sat watched it.
Although it's probably more science fiction than horror, I watched ALIEN vs PREDATOR after she went to bed last night, or perhaps I should say early this morning.
