I don't have an iPiod- and even if I did I wouldn't know what to do with it (!) - but I'm in my Dean Martin mode.
A couple of days ago I bought his, belated, double album release called That's Amore - and it's superb!
I've always favoured Dean's work on the Reprise label in the 1960's, and this album has it's fair share of it
I have many other albums of his - studio and live - but can anybody guess how many times 'Little 'Ole Wine Drinker Me' was played on the old Adelphi Hotel jukebox in my home town during the 1980's?
The grooves should have worn out! Everyone put it on, and it became an anthem for the place - mainly because it gave the piano player more time to get blotto in the bar!

Cruising through my music collection the other day and found myself drawn to Mario Lanza. I had forgotten that I had most all of his recordings on CD, but ran across one called "The Essential Mario Lanza" that contains all of my favorites including "Be My Love", "Because You're Mine", and so many others too numerous to mention. I had forgotten how great his voice was, and why some compared him the other great opera singers of the time.
Also discovered that I had some of his movies and will probably spend the better part of this week getting through those also.
;D

Midge, that Dean Martin disc on the now defunct Adelphi hotel jukebox probably lasted longer than the lifetime of a CD!
As for your guess of eleventy jillion times - you're way out, it was more than that!

Midge, Dean couldn't drink any higher than that!
Even now, over 20 years of the place's defunction, every time I listen to that song my mind takes me back to it.

Midge, Dean couldn't drink any higher than that! He probably coined the phrase, "I'm not as think as you drunk I am." :drunk:

For Christmas I got a 3-Disc set called The Essential Shadows. It contains 36 of their all-time biggest hits and even includes a couple of the singles from Jet Harris and Tony Meehan after they left the group. I don't think these CD's have left my CD player in the car since the day after Christmas. Some really great tunes including "Dance On", "Wonderful Land" and "Apache" are highlights of the set which includes "Diamonds" by Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. Some great guitar instrumental work. Hank Marvin was my hero when I got turned on to The Shadows back in the Sixties. ;D Ooooh, the Shadows were good! My parents had a lot of their records, so I grew up listening to them.

I just got a box set of Jo Stafford recordings, so I am currently listening to that. I know almost none of it, so I'm trying to get to know it a little. I like her voice a lot!

My new listening obsession is a 4CD set that I got from the library (and I'll definitely have to buy it) called "Back to Mono," it's a collection of Phil Spector's music. Now, I know the guy was/is a bit "out there," but there's no doubt that he produced some fabulous music. This has all the hits by the Crystals, the Ronettes, Tina Turner and more. There were a few songs on there that I had NO idea he was connected with including Gene Pitney (who I LOVE!!) The 4th CD is the Christmas one that he did in 1963. It wasn't a success then because it came out when Pres. Kennedy was killed. If you love these songs, I highly recommend this!

Kimmer, that sounds like a great collection of songs! I love 60s music. And Gene Pitney had such a unique voice! I love it. "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" is a favourite of mine.

I love 60's music too--I was around, but too little to appreciate it. My memories are vague. I LOOOOOOOVE Gene Pitney--what a FABULOUS voice. And he knew how to use it too....sigh, there'll never be another singer like him. Two of my favorite songs of his are "24 Hours from Tulsa" and "Looking Through the Eyes of Love." But, I love most of them!!

Midge, Dean's drinking was a self-perpetuated myth - because if he drank as much as he claimed to do he wouldn't have had such as a long and successful career as he had.
All the same, I wouldn't have wanted to go out on a bender with him! He could have drank me under a bar stool!

All the same, I wouldn't have wanted to go out on a bender with him! He could have drank me under a bar stool! The myth served him well, whether or not it was true. I think he could have drunk us both under a bar stool. I have the capacity of a gnat.

Look for a touring group that says they are "the official tribute to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jerry Vale".
They are referred to as "The Golden Voices", and feature three young men, who not only sound like Frank, Dean and Jerry, but from certain angles they resemble them very much.
The show was just here in Wichita last weekend, and we got the privilege of attending one of the performances. I had forgotten how many songs by Jerry Vale that I remembered when they were sung. It was almost three hours of wonderful music and memories. They had these big 'Diamond Vision' video screens behind them with pictures of Frank, Dean and Jerry. It was a very well done show.
They have been out on tour for just over a month, and their first dates were in New Jersey, and they have been working their way across the country, so look for them when they play in your area. It is definitely worth the price of admission.

Midge, how would Dean, Frankie and Sammy have coped with the smoking ban?!
They always said that business would never stand in the way of them having a good time - but they obviously never legislated for this!

They certainly wouldn't have liked it, but I'd prefer to think that if they had been forced to quit smoking, they might have lived a lot longer. All three died of cancer.

Sadly, they did - but I wonder what the size of their liver's were.
They lived life to the full, but - as is said - you can't burn a candle at both ends.

That's true, Robin. They probably all drank too much. Cirrhosis of the liver is pretty horrible way to die, too. Drinking and smoking together are said to increase the risk of cancer more than smoking alone.

I bought a CD last week called the best of the Blue Oyster Cult - mainly on the strength of a single I remember from the 1970's called 'Don't Fear The Reaper' - and I wasn't too sure about it.
But it was money well spent, because I've played it three times and it's good!
My musical tastes go from Sinatra to The Sex Pistols - someone once thought that I only listened to those two!
An intrigueing thought!

What a coincidence, Robin. Just the other day I was listening to "Don't Fear the Reaper" on my iPod as I was working out in the gym. Great song!

It's a great song to work out to!
After the first couple of tracks I thought I'd bought a pig in a poke, but I really warmed to it and it's been in my machine several times since!

Today I bought a Simon and Garfunkel box set that includes all their studio albums plus a Central Park live album for £14 - reduced from £28 - I've certainly got an eye for bargains!
I've not played it yet - but I'm champing at the bit!

Ah, Simon and Garfunkel. I have such fond memories of listening to their music when I was growing up. Yesterday I downloaded this song by Max Raabe and The Palaster Orchester. Raabe's specialty is the popular songs of the Weimar (pre-Hitler) era in Germany, and he also sings American songs from the 1920's and 30's. I love his versions of "You're the Cream in my Coffee" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me." The dapper Raabe always wears a wry expression and a slicked-down 1920's hairstyle. He dresses in a wide-lapel vintage tux with bow tie and high collar. He and his orchestra are great fun to watch even if you don't speak the language. "Mein Kleiner Grüner Kaktus" means "My Little Green Cactus." Enjoy!

Tiny, I'm glad that you appreciate my varied musical tastes - someone recently told me that all the records and CD's I like are so old that all the holes in the middles have healed up!
