Firstly I have to say that when I was born there was no official hit parade or top 20 in the UK. I think that they began in 1952/53. But if I had been born in the USA then the number one song would have been "Oh, What It Seemed To Be" TA-DA , what a marvellous song, recorded, of course, by the one and only Frankie Carle Gee whizz, is that the best that could be arranged for my Birthday, I have never heard of it. By contrast and making matters worse, if I had been born in 1945 it would have been Rum And Coca Cola by The Andrews Sisters.

I'll take Rum and Coca Cola any day over Buttons and Bows. Of course then I'd have to be three years older. :uhuh:

"Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean ...
There were two versions produced on 45 record: The rare one has the lyric "he was one hell of a man" ...
The more commonly heard mass produced version replaced that line with "he was a big big man" ...
Anyway, I turned out to be both ... he he ...

Hey, Midge! You're a dufus! You deleted my posting! TC asked me why I hadn't yet posted my song and I told her "I did! it's right below yours!" She said "No it isn't!" So I came in and looked and noticed you got rid of my song!!!! ;D Anyway, the song popular when I was born was "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" by Herman's Hermits! PS — Midge, next time you delete my posting, you'll be demoted to dishwasher and cleaning the bathrooms! :toilet:

Larry, I'm so sorry! Honestly, I didn't realize I'd done that, and I certainly didn't do it on purpose. Maybe I was been trying to quote you and hit Delete by mistake? Please, please, boss! Don't demote me! I wash enough dishes and clean enough bathrooms at home. : :

Great idea,Midge. Like seeing the different songs, for all of us. You can certainly tell what time period,we were born in. Really Neat. "Best Of My Love",that sure brings back memories. HS days. It was OUR song. Elvis,I knew it would be Elvis. Heartbreak Motel for my year. That was FUN.

I was born on a very boring day (obviously). I had to look it up but in America "Vaya con Dios" by Les Paul and Mary Ford and in the UK "Answer Me" by David Whitfield - none of which I have heard of. I have seen the name "Vaya con Dios" but don't get me to hum a few bars.

Both of those songs were "revived" some years later and were reasonably successful, Vaya Con Dios was a hit for a dire duo called Millican and Nesbitt. I can't remember who "remade" Answer Me but I do know the song quite well, it begins "Answer me oh my love, tell me just what sin I'm guilty of, in my sorrow now I turrn to you, so answer me my love" Hey, move over Cole Porter, there's a new kid on the block. In the Britain of the 1950s David Whitfield was very popular.

I think if you ever cared to actually explore the work Les Paul did with Mary Ford, you'd be pleasantly impressed by them ... They were recording things unlike anyone else at the time possibly could, because the multi-track units they used were Les Paul's own inventions ...

I just watched that kimmer ... That's how I knew LOL ... I have an old LP I broke out after that special. I loved it. Has the same hit songs on it.
Dig his guitar work and her vocal stylings. I guess she was first to be able to harmonize with her own voice using his dubbing invention.
I always the first was Patti Page ...

I hope so too ... It was an episode of "American Masters" ...
This album doesn't have "Vaya Con Dios" and I don't think I've ever heard it. So this means there exists a number one song I've never heard and that's not possible ... :uhuh: ...
Ahumm ...

Now I have "Vaya Con Dios" stuck in my head.... If you've seen all of the episodes of "I Love Lucy," you've heard this song. Desi sings it in the spisode where Lucy splices together some films. You hear Desi singing "Vaya Con Dios" interspersed with Lucy and Ethel singing "I'm an Old Cowhand." ;D (you can probably find several versions of this song on "you tube") I just checked, go to www.youtube.com, type in Les Paul and Mary Ford on the search line--there's lots of footage!! Enjoy!!

I have heard of "Vaya Con Dios" all of my life! And I am a very big fan of Les Paul and Mary Ford! I also love their version of "Mockingbird Hill"! It really amazes me that many others here have not heard this song. That's truly bizarre. And, Jeff, as for the other song "Answer Me", I believe I've heard this one too, after examing the lyrics you posted. Wasn't this also done by Nat King Cole?

Larry, yes Nat King Cole certainly had a hit over here with that song. During the 50s it was quite common for two artists to have a hit with the same song, it's quite possible that Nat King Cole had the original version, at the moment I'm too lazy to check it out.
