Has anyone read any of her books? Ruth Rendell writes crime novels that often feature Inspector Wexford. She also writes more "out there" books (I don't know how else to discribe them) under the pen name of Barbara Vine. I have been reading (and re-reading ) her books for more than 20 years. She has won many awards - she is an excellent writer. If you read her books chronologically there is also the story of Wexford and his partner Burdon as they go through their ups and downs. I don't like the Barbara Vine books as much. Some of them are good but others have more bizarre plots. Anyway I bought "Asta's Book" by Barbara Vine and if I could suspend sleep and keep reading the book until the end I would. It is so good. There is too much going on in it to give a straight plot line. The story is about a Danish woman that starts a diary in 1905, a sensational (fictional) murder that takes place in the same suburb and time that Asta is writing and an old woman (in modern day) searching for her identity. Swanny is Asta's daughter and when she is in her 50s she receives an anonymous letter saying she is not who she thinks she is. When she asks Asta, Asta (who is not a nice character really) is very ambiguous in her reply and it affects Swanny the rest of her life. She is determined to find out who she really is. I would really recommend this book .

Perhaps these books would be available through the Amazon used book dealers.

The thing I also like about "Asta's Book' is that most of the people in it are 40 + . It shows older people can have exciting lives as well.
