Directed by and starring the fabulous Orson Welles! This film also stars Edward G Robinson, Loretta Young, and Philip Merivale.
Today I spent $6.00 on a set of DVDs (one of those low-priced DVDs in the small variety stores); these DVDs are entitled Classic Film Noir. Among the many titles of this set, The Stranger happens to be an intriguing, suspenseful film!
Welles plays a professor, who marries the daughter of a judge (Young) and attempts to hide his past as a fearless Nazi leader. Robinson has been hot on his trail to bring him to justice for war crimes.
This is an awesome 95-minute film worth seeing!

I have seen The Stranger many times, and I agree, it's a minor gem. It's a well-plotted thriller with excellent acting from a cast of Hollywood pros. Welles gives an intense, moody performance as Franz Kindler, who moves to a small town to escape his past. Edward G. Robinson is excellent as the Nazi hunter. His character will remind you of Keyes in Double Indemnity. Loretta Young, luminous and beautiful, is effective as the frightened, innocent young bride who fears her new husband may not be what he seems. The suspenseful clock tower ending will leave you with your heart racing. I recommend this movie highly.

I also can remember liking this film a lot. I will have to look up "Classic Film Noirs" on Amazon. Your recommendations are always good Larry.

Hi! Larry, Midge, Diana ,harlowbaby and Diner members, I also watched and own the "wunderkind" director Orson Welles' classic film "The Stranger" but I purchased the Questar boxset aptly called "5 Film Noir Killer Classics" with 5 films that are considered noir...Just to get my hands on a "copy" of Welles' "The Stranger." ( Also included in the boxset.... D.O.A., Detour, (with the late actress Ann Savage who(m) recently passed away on Christmas Day!) Scarlet Street and Killer Bait. with an extra bonus disc featuring film noir trailers.) FNF
