I voted "no preference" because I've never had a dish, only cable. I honestly don't know if I'd like satellite better.

We have satellite (digital) so I voted for that.

Unfortunately, I've never had cable in my life, just basic TV. Besides PBS, I never see old movies. I wish I had cable though for TCM.

sadly i don't have a choice, i can only get cable at my apt. bldg. altho i have to say that the service and selection are very good and i'm happy with it. but i think satellite is way ahead in the vote for obvious reasons. it's a nice option for many.

I would love to try satellite because everyone who has it seems to love it. The only problem is, in my neighborhood, you can't get a signal because there's a mountain in the way. Our cable system is pretty good, though. Come to think of it, if I had any more channels to choose from, I'd probably never leave the house!

I think satellite is the better choice between the two. One of the biggest reasons is that you get more for your dollar!
Many cable TV providers will offer you packages of 30 - 50 channels, and you can often get more by getting the digital package. In addition, if you pay more, you can get Pay-per-View, sports channels, premium channels like HBO and Cinemax, etc.
With satellite providers, you'll generally get larger packages with much more programming! Oftentimes, you can get channels on satellite that many cable companies don't offer. And on satellite, they generally provide you with a very broad selection of music channels as part of their packages. I'm not referring to music videos; I mean actual music (audio) channels!
To us, there are only two drawbacks to having a satellite dish:
1) Although such a petty reason, there is about a 5-second lag behind real-time. If you were to place two TVs beside each other, on the same channel, one connected to satellite, and the other connected to cable (or even using the "rabbit ear" antennae, you would notice that what is broadcast on satellite is lagged about 5 seconds behind what is broadcast on the other television. Again, this is such a frivolous reason.
2) On extremely over-cast days, but specifically when you have severe thunderstorms, it's possible to lose the satellite signal reception. But this, too, is a seldom occurrence.
Again, I would have satellite any day over cable!

Again, this is such a frivolous reason. Larry, the reason for the lag is that the satellite is in space. The terrestrial signal is transmitted to the satellite, and from there the signal is beamed back down to Earth. It's also the reason that when ground control talks to the astronauts, there are long gaps between the question and reply. It takes a few seconds for a signal to travel into space and then return.

Yes, Midge, that is correct. That's pretty much what I was wanting to convey to Liz; I just didn't get that technical. Satellite relies on signals, whereas cable relies more on fiber optics.

I have Satellite (it's the only way I can get TCM) But, I installed a A/B switch to run cable in case I lose the satellite signal.

Cable.
Satellite is very unreliable in my area. Everyone I know who has it spends half their lives on their roof. And the signal still goes out in the middle of shows all the time. I was in my dentist's office the other day and his dish in on the roof of an 18-story building with no obstructions. During the course of my appointment, the satellite lost and had to regain it's signal about 15 times. AT LEAST. That is a very low estimate - seriously.
No way would could I live with that sort of service.

I used to have Primestar satellite service before DirectTV took it over, and then I was totally disappointed with their service and their loss of signal. DishTV is way too pricey for what you get, so I guess I am among the people who prefer Cable - Digital Cable, at that. Since we moved to Kansas from California, we were told to stay away from Satellite because of the high winds, tornadoes, and just general crappy winter and springtime weather. Cox Communications is the sole provider here in Wichita, and I have been with them for the seven years we have been there. My neighbor has a DirecTV hookup and whenever I am at his house there are signal drops once or twice in an hour during the summer months, and he takes the dish down during tornado season to save on repairs. I like my Cable service, we have over 70 Hi-Def channels, and in seven years I don't think I have lost signal but once or twice. Even during extreme weather, since all of our utilities are underground, we never lose signal. We always get notice when they are doing repair work in our area, so we can plan our television watching accordingly. I have compared pricing on Satellite over what I get on Cable, and I seem to come out a lot cheaper than those I know who have DirecTV. I subscribe to everything Cox has to offer and still pay less than $100 a month and that includes a Hi-Def DVR with a built in DVD Recorder at no charge. We have service to two rooms in the house including the Home Theater downstairs.

Well, when we lived in the suburbs of Oklahoma City, we had Multimedia Cablevision; this company was fair. But when we actually lived in Oklahoma City, we too had Cox Communications. I agree with you, Bill, that Cox is far superior — one of the best cable systems in the country! But when we moved back here to Missouri, the area in which we lived was not serviced by Cox; it is serviced by US Cable. Neither TC nor I am satisfied or pleased with the services they provide or the manner in which they provide them so I won't go too much into that conversation! So we have been serviced by both DirecTV and Dish Network; the latter is the one from which we have been best serviced. The first few months we had Dish wasn't too great, but the subsequent few years we had them, we had superior service! At present we have no service at all — just the local two television stations, as we are in the process of catching up from our moving expenses etc etc. But we are hoping that, within the next couple months, to have our satellite service restored. Needless to say, in the small rural community in which we live, satellite is the only option available to us; however, that doesn't hurt our feelings since that is what we prefer anyway!

In addition to the above complaints about Satellite TV, there are also problems getting local channels with some systems. My son's former babysitter had one TV NOT connected to their satellite system so they could get the local channels. I'm not sure what system they had but it included local channels in OTHER cities like Seattle, and no Salt Lake City area channels.
I understand that cable isn't for everyone, especially if you don't live where you can get it. After my dad passed away, my mom subscribed to Dish network when she was still in Drain, OR. We lived 7 miles from town so couldn't get cable even if we wanted to and when many of our rural neighbors started getting satellite dishes my dad said they were "a bunch of d--- foolishness". When she moved to Lebanon she stayed with Dish network because she likes their service - I don't know whether she's too far from town for cable, but all her neighbors are satellite users so it must not be available.

I've never had satellite service. I live in a small town so our cable service is rather limited. Frankly, I'm not UNhappy with it, I just wish we could get "E" and "TCM," then I'd be content. (and I'm sure I'd be glued to the TV if I had those channels!!)
