This is a survey you would really have to think about. I don't watch a lot of new films but I would say George Clooney as Rhett Butler. He reminds me so much of the old time stars like Gable and Tracy - a real man's man. He always has a smile on his face. I haven't seen him in any films only in magazines. But he always seems to be in quite good films. For Ashley I would pick Clive Owen - he looks nothing like Leslie Howard but I could imagine him in the role. That said I would never go and see a remake of "Gone With the Wind" - why tamper with perfection?

I also would never remake it, but it's still fun to think of the possibilities. How about Britney Spears as Scarlett? ;D Kidding, kidding... ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

how about bert reynolds as rhett butler......lol Yeah, Burt Reynolds -- as Rhett Butler's grandfather! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) No one can replace Clark Gable. There isn't one movie star alive today who could even come close. That said, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Scarlett O'Hara? Jane Horrocks as Melanie? Sean Connery as Gerald O'Hara? Annette Bening as Ellen O'Hara (Scarlett's mother)? Leonardo Di Caprio as Ashley Wilkes? Sally Struthers as Aunt Pittypat? Bette Midler as Belle Watling? Morgan Freeman as Pork?

I can definitely see Bette Midler as Belle Watling! ;D But I can't see Morgan Freeman taking such a small and thankless role as Pork. They'd certainly have to make the character less stereotypical for him to play it!

I thought Timothy Dalton and Joanne Walley-Killmer did a good job as Rhett and Scarlett in the "Scarlett" movie, even though I found fault with some parts of the actual story. Suddenly I can't recall who else was in it except Esther Rolle playing Mammy (more on that below). I agree with Midge's choices of Sean Connery as Scarlett's father and Bette Midler as Belle Whatling, undecided about some of the others though - oh wait, who wanted Britney Spears? She might make a good Suellen since she was the spoiled brat in tough times! ;D I have the perfect voice for Prissy, although the lady might be too tall for the part: there was a song in the early 90's called "No More Lies" by a young woman called "Michel'le" (yes, that apostrophe is supposed to be there), sometimes she stopped singing and started talking (not the rap kind of talk), and she sounded exactly like Butterfly McQueen then. Strangely enough, her singing voice was no more high-pitched than Whitney Houston. I didn't care for Esther Rolle's short dying scene as Mammy in "Scarlett" though. Don't get me wrong, Esther Rolle was a good actress in general, but the way they had her play Mammy wasn't so good - she was lying in bed wearing an obviously-phony white wig. But even if that wig hadn't been so ugly, the sequel was supposed to have started just a few weeks after the original story ended, why would Mammy's hair have gone white so suddenly? ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

In the first and last place, if a re-make of this film is done, the person who re-makes it should be whipped with a wet noodle until the pasta marks shine like old, old pants!! Hattie McDaniel and Clark Gable are simple not replaceable. And Vivien Leigh as Scarlett? Come on, is anyone really stupid enough to think that she could play the part after Vivien? To replace the long shot from the pull-out pan of the outdoor hospital scene would simply take re-doing the scene exactly as it was done. That was one of the most poignant and perfect shots in the history of film. Frankly, why take what was considered the greatest picture ever made when it was released and try to duplicate THAT picture. What's wrong with some creativity for a change - how about a new film? Not the same ol' same ol...please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a very good point, R. Michael. I agree with you 100%. It would be foolish to try to recapture that magic, especially now that bean counters are running the business. The casting suggestions I made were nothing more than an exercise in "what if." Gone With the Wind should never be remade, and no actors living today could ever erase the memory of that magnificent original cast.

I agree whole-heartedly, RMichael & Midge! The original will never be surpassed! But hypothetically speaking, if it were to happen .... Tom Selleck as Rhett Butler (TC's idea, but I totally agree!) Lois Smith as Belle Watling Kris Kristofferson as Gerald O'Hara perhaps? :devilish: Tilda Swinton as Scarlett O'Hara Kathy Bates or Angela Lansbury as Aunt Pitty-Pat Brad Pitt as Ashley Wilkes Mary-Louise Parker as Melanie Wilkes Out of ideas for Mammy ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

[/sub][/quote] RMichael, I do hope you made a mistake on that line about how Vivien Leigh couldn't play Scarlett after Vivien. ;D I agree about remakes, it would be a sin to try remaking GWTW with a new cast. The "Scarlett" movie is a different story, since it was a different story and the book wasn't even written until most of the original cast was already dead so they had to get new people to play all the parts. Now about remakes in general: I didn't mind the remake of "The Parent Trap" with Lindsey Lohan (sp) because they stuck to the original story for the most part - the best part of the LL version was that the lady who played the dad's girlfriend was a more believable gold-digger than the woman trying to catch Brian Keith in the original. But I didn't like the Shelley Long remake of "Freaky Friday" very well (haven't seen the Jamie Lee Curtis version yet), and you DO NOT want to get me started on "That Darn Cat!" Even if I had never seen or heard of the original version with Haley Mills, I still would have hated the new version because the movie was just plain stupid!
