Hi! Diner Members, Here goes a link to the MPF were I posted information about the Castro Theatre as they celebrate some great films that were released in 1939....Therefore, The question is this if you were living in 1939.... What 5 films (Oops! Yes, Diana of the films that are being screened here at the Castro too!) would you have visited the theatre to watch repeatedly? (This of course is before the invention of DVD players.I will return to list my 5 choices.) CELEBRATING the 70th ANNIVERSARY of the GREATEST YEAR....IN FILM.FNF

Thanks for the link, FNF! Of all the films showing at the Castro, I would watch The Women over and over again. The dialogue is so delightfully witty and deliciously catty. I once saw it at the Castro and you could barely hear the lines for all the laughter in the theater! I think I would also have enjoyed repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Dark Victory, Stagecoach and Young Mr Lincoln.

From the films that are showing - definately No. 1 would be "The Women" - I agree with Midge's comments completely. 2. "Each Dawn I Die" 3. "Son of Frankenstein I then went and had a look at wikipaedia - the films that were made in 1939. 4. "Bachelor Mother' - it would have to be my favourite Ginger Rogers' film and one of my top comedies. 5. "The Arsenal Stadium Mystery". It was made in 1939 (even though it was released in the States in 1940.) I have it and I have seen it quite a few times. It is a comedy mystery with Leslie Banks as an eccentric detective inspector (that man could play anything). It also had the lovely Greta Gynt, has a football background and even though I have seen it several times the ending is always a suprise.

I know I can return the favour FNF. I have "Love Affair" in a 50 movies pack, my daughter is here on holiday and I just know she would love that movie. I have never seen it before but I have heard tons of nice remarks about it.

I have never seen it before but I have heard tons of nice remarks about it. Hi! Diana, If you ever watched actor Cary Grant and actress Deborah Kerr in the film An Affair to Remember....Well, the Boyer and Dunne vehicle is the original. By the way, both films were directed by the same director Leo McCarey, and both films was "shot" practically verbatim. I must admit that I really like both versions too!...I'am quite sure that your daughter will enjoy both versions... ...Oops! I almost forgot to mention the 3rd version or remake of this film starring the husband and wife team of actor Warren Beatty and Annette Benning taking over the lead roles. (and the legendary Katharine Hepburn, taking over the role as the very modern grandmother, to Warren Beatty's character.) By the way, director/actor Warren Beatty, used director Leo McCarey's original title Love Affair.Oh! yes, I have watched all three versions...I have to admit that the original and remake are part of my mother's film library. And I gave her my copy of the Beatty/Benning version to add to her classic/modern collection. FNF

Diana, I did find a copy of The Arsenal Stadium Mysteryplease don't ask me what was the "sticker price"...Well, here goes it is nearly $40.00 over there at eBay and $36.00 at Amazon.Co/UK com (I didn't include the price of shipping and handling) Thank goodness a seller that I deal with plan to sell me a copy for half the price that eBay and Amazon.com Co/UKcom are asking for this film. Diana, this must be an interesting film...because it received 5 to 3 stars from Amazon.com customers that reviewed this film. (Clarification:) This film is available only on VHS at Amazon.com in the UK...and on DVD only if you own an all region DVD player. FNF

I am so glad that you can get it cheaper FNF because I wouldn't pay the price that you mentioned. To add insult to injury, it is often on late night TV over here - that's were I taped it from. It is significant because some of the players from Arsenal were actually in the film. It was their last official game before the outbreak of World War 11 so it was quite authentic. I hope you enjoy it and are not cursing me for recommending it before the film is finished.

As for The Arsenal Stadium Mystery, don't bother asking the current Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about it, because he'll probably say that he did not see it!
But it is a very good film though.

I THink Turner Classic movies in Month of July going show marthon of Movies release in 1939 they going do world premire docutenary on year 1939 Hi! Kelly, Right you are!...Here goes some additional info(rmation) about the films that were released in 1939 that TCM plan to air in the month of July. 1939 – July It is called Hollywood’s Golden Year, when the artistic visions of directors and producers and the money interests of the studios came together in a way that has never been duplicated since. It is little wonder that in such a year, 10 films earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture, including winner Gone with the Wind and fellow nominees The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Stagecoach, Dark Victory, Of Mice and Men, Love Affair and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. It was also a year that saw such amazing productions as Gunga Din, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex. TCM celebrates the Golden Year with a month-long festival in July. How very apropos Kelly, considering today is July 01 2009...and the celebration starts today. Check out! The link...I'am not sure if the link will open properly...sometimes it will download and sometimes it willn't download properly. Celebrating Films From 1939Thanks, for sharing! FNF

[/IMG] .
I know, I know a fellow blogger, who live in Australia, and was the proprietor of the now defunct Filmsnoir.net website... mentioned on his blog to his readers that in the land down under how on late night TV some great classic film noir and classic films in general are constantly, being aired on the telly. It is significant because some of the players from Arsenal were actually in the film. It was their last official game before the outbreak of World War 11 so it was quite authentic. I hope you enjoy it and are not cursing me for recommending it before the film is finished. Oh! Yeah, Diana, I read that information about the players in this film while doing some "indepth" research about the film. Amazing!!!! Ha! ha!...Oh! No! I’ am not "cursing" you!...I’ am sending out a Thank-you! for mentioning this film to me ...or it would have slipped right under my radar screen! Once again Thanks for sharing! FNF ;D
