"Hey Santa" by Carnie and Wendy Wilson "Last Christmas" by Wham "Baby's First Christmas" by Connie Francis "All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth" by Spike Jones "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Jimmy Boyd "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney
They all get on my very last nerve! I can stand "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano for about 10 plays, but after that I want to throttle him.
What are your least favorite holiday songs?

Most remakes of songs like "White Christmas" and "Sleigh Ride" will make me turn the dial on the radio. My one least favorite song is "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" by Elmo and Patsy. That song has been run in the ground big time. My all-time favorites include:
"Sleigh Ride" - Boston Pops Orchestra "Silver Bells" - Bing Crosby "The Chipmunk Song - Christmas Don't Be Late" - David Seville and the Chipmunks "White Christmas" - Bing Crosby "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" - Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters "Green Chri$tma$" - Stan Freberg (Love this one so much I have made a CD-R of this song, it is repeated about 10 times). "Nuttin' For Christmas" - Stan Freberg "The Little Drummer Boy" - The Harry Simeon Chorale (no other version, please) "Sleigh Ride" - Ray Conniff Singers "Santa and his Old Lady" - Cheech and Chong "Here Comes Santa Claus" - Gene Autry "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" - Gene Autry "A Holly Jolly Christmas" - Burl Ives
There a more, but those songs only by those artists. I don't not like 'modern-day' interpretations of classic holiday songs.

What holiday baked treat do you especially look forward to at this time of year?

That's easy. My daughter makes, from scratch, the world's best Apple Pie, and she only bakes them during the holiday season. Wish there was a way to flash-freeze these things and I would send you one. No ice cream, no whip cream, no nothing, unless you want to. The crust is light, fluffy and crunchy, and warm out of the oven. She uses Granny Smith apples, and some kind of cinnamon and some other ingredients that she doesn't share. All I can say the holidays can't get here quick enough when I know that she is going to bake some apple pies - usually three or four.

That pie sounds really good! Every year I look forward to Lebkuchen, the German honey-spice cookie. My mother in law used to bake them for us. Now I bake them from her recipe. They need to age to soften and blend the flavors, so fortunately I had already made them before I broke my arm. It's not really Christmas without Lebkuchen.
Do you use an electric blanket?

Not with the sky-high prices of electricity in the midwest. We just toss on an extra blanket during the three months of winter.

No, but we use an electric mattress pad. Our bedroom is located directly above an unheated front entrance, so it's always the coldest room in the house. If we don't preheat the bed before getting in, the sheets feel icy.
Have you ever been locked out of the house?

Only once that I can remember, but Beverly saved the day because she knew where the spare key was hidden and I didn't. With two families sharing the house it doesn't happen very often.

15 years ago or so. Haven't worn a tie since we moved to Kansas. Don't think we even brought one with us when we moved.

Have you finished your Christmas shopping?

Post by dvdjunkie on Dec 16, 2013 9:47:08 GMT -6
Yes I have!!! We have it all wrapped, and ready to put under the tree. Just have to finish getting the tree ready for the holidays. We have it up and lit, but have to put the bulbs and holly on it, and then the gifts can start piling up. It is going to be kids Christmas for sure this year.
Have you put off Christmas shopping looking for the last-minute sales?

No, I try to get my gift shopping done as early as possible. I did take advantage of an on-line sale to buy one item for myself, though.

What are your plans for Christmas Day?

|
Post by dvdjunkie on Dec 18, 2013 9:23:04 GMT -6
Hope the kids sleep in till about nine a.m. and then open gifts as a family. We are having a Spiral-Cut Ham for our Christmas dinner this year, and Beverly and my daughter, Traci, will get that all started, and I'll probably watch a movie or two, and wait for dinner which should be served between two and three pm in the afternoon.
Do you have different plans this year for Christmas Day?

|
|
Post by Midge on Dec 18, 2013 18:49:29 GMT -6
Yes, because with my arm in a cast I can't cook as I usually would. Normally I'd roast a turkey breast on Christmas Eve and serve all the usual accompaniments such as biscuits, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potatoes, gravy, green beans, pumpkin pie, etc. Then we'd have the leftovers on Christmas Day. But this year we will go out to our usual Tuesday night Italian restaurant on Christmas Eve. I don't know yet what we'll do on Christmas Day, perhaps either find a restaurant that's open or else have pre-cooked turkey entrees and side dishes from Trader Joe's.
What do you hope Santa will bring you this year?

|
Post by dvdjunkie on Dec 19, 2013 7:41:25 GMT -6
I already got my Christmas present from my darling wife, daughter and son-in-law - an over-sized, over-stuffed recliner!! It is beautiful and I am hoping that I can get my daughter to take a picture of me in it and show me how to post it here. This was totally unexpected, because my letter to Santa said that I wanted some DVD or Blu-ray titles, and needed some new slippers. Never thought that my old rickety rocker-recliner would ever get replaced. If I don't get anything else, I have had a very fulfilling Christmas.
Has this current year - 2013 - seemed shorter than year's past for you?

Yes, every year seems to whisk by a bit faster than the year before. That comes with getting older, I guess.

All of my Christmases are special nowadays. I have always been near family or with family for Christmas, and this year we are celebrating our first Christmas in the new house.
Okay, I'll ask:
Do you have particularly fond memories of any one Christmas from your past?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Dec 21, 2013 18:55:25 GMT -6
Yes, although it's what happened after Christmas that made it special. Ironically, it was Christmas of 1963, just after JFK's assassination, a sad time otherwise. I received the most amazing gift ever from my dad and stepmother, a miniature battery-operated reel-to-reel tape recorder. I had so much fun with that thing! But the real treat was that I was reunited with my mother for the first time since summer of 1960, when I was 11. We met at a family reunion which my aunt (her oldest sister) and uncle brought me to, so I also got to see my grandmother and all my other aunts, uncles and cousins that I hadn't seen since my dad remarried. It was a wonderful celebration. I also discovered to my shock that at barely 15, I was taller than my mother, and her hair had turned gray! But I recognized her right away.
Was there ever a holiday when something went wrong, like in A Christmas Story when the dog steals the roast turkey?

2006 stands out like a sore thumb. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. First, we forgot to thaw the turkey, then we had not gotten back our roaster pan, which we lent to a neighbor. Then on top of all that, Wichita had the worst snow storm in twenty years, making travel a real chore. Christmas dinner at our house, this was before we ever moved in the kids, was going to be something special, and turned out to be a 'train-wreck'. Our daughter called and said she had a nice, large ham we could use for the main meat course and our Son, who was speaking to us then, called and said that he and Christy, his wife, had two pies, and a pan full of peeled potatoes that they were bringing. So instead of Turkey for Christmas dinner we had a nice ham, and all of the other fixin's that seemed out of place with ham since they were meant to be with turkey. And the icing on the cake, we only eight of us, instead of the planned 12 family members for dinner. I will remember that year for a long time to come.
How about you: Was there ever a holiday when something went wrong, like in A Christmas Story when the dog steals the roast turkey?

Yes, it was the first Christmas after we got married, and the first Christmas in our new house. It was supposed to be a special, romantic dinner for two, but it didn't turn out that way. I had decided to roast a turkey breast, and had bought all the ingredients well in advance so there wouldn't be any last minute rush. On Christmas Day I put the turkey in the oven and prepared the other dishes. Within an hour or so, the house started to smell like rotten garbage. That's when I realized that the turkey had gone bad. I had bought it too far in advance, and it was rancid. So we aired out the house and had all the side dishes for Christmas dinner, but the main course was bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches! Do you hang stockings on Christmas Eve?

Post by dvdjunkie on Dec 22, 2013 20:07:57 GMT -6
Yes. We have this really nice living room in the new house that has a really nice fireplace with a beautiful mantle and all six stockings are hung there as we speak. Our tree sits in the bay window, and our house really looks like Christmas is coming.
Do you have any plans for New Year's Eve?

To be honest, a new administration in Washington, but we aren't supposed to discuss those things on this forum. What do you wish for in 2014? That's OK, Bill. I'll give you a pass, but just this once! Obama's approval rating is at an all-time low, 42%, so you have lots of company. Just don't be dissin' my girl Hillary. I wish for kitchen renovations. Our appliances are over 27 years old, the dishwasher stopped working two years ago, one of the burners on the stove has a part broken and leans sideways, the oven insulation is shot, and the refrigerator makes funny noises when the motor goes on. It's time! Oh, and peace on earth, good will to men, etc. and so on, but I need a new kitchen! What talent or skill that you don't possess now would you most like to have?

I think that I would have liked going to culinary school and learning to be a chef. I am not too bad in the kitchen, but I know that there are shorter ways to get certain things done that I am not aware of. I do clean up all of my pans, because I do use a lot of them, and don't want anyone to every say they hate cleaning up after me. Everyone that eats my food says it is really good, and just fires my desire to be a better cook.
Good question, let's ask it again:
What talent or skill that you don't possess now would you most like to have?
