That was wonderful! As far as I know, it's the only time Clark Gable ever performed in a musical number. For a non-singer and non-dancer, did pretty well.

Yeah I think you are right he did little dancing with Gone with the wind remember southern belle dance when he dance with Vivian Leigh

"Some dude"  is Harry Richman (1895-1972), a popular and multi-talented musical star of the 1920s. He was not much of an actor, so he didn't survive the transition to sound films. He continued to be in demand as a Broadway and night club entertainer until his retirement in the 1940s. Richman made his movie debut in Puttin' on the Ritz and also recorded the title song. The movie critic Leonard Maltin writes of Puttin' on the Ritz "A songwriter drinks and goes blind - after seeing this, you'll want to do the same."  You can see in this clip why movie musicals didn't work in the early days. They were staged exactly like Broadway shows, with a static wide shot showing vast regiments of singers and dancers on stage. Showing the whole stage worked in a theater, but not on film, because the performers look like swarming ants. It wasn't until Busby Berkeley reinvented the genre with close-ups, clever editing and innovative camera angles that musicals finally took off. |

Actually he'd been acting for quite awhile when this was done. He hated this!! Carole Lombard teased him a lot about this routine. I can't remember what she did tho (many of my books are packed away) At the time MGM was trying to turn many of their male stars into musical performers. Has anyone heard Jimmy Stewart's musical debut? YIKES!! He made fun of himself in "That's Entertainment" so he was a good sport about it. |

It's in the 1936 movie Born to Dance co-starring Eleanor Powell. Stewart dances, too. He's no Fred Astaire, but he's not bad for an amateur. |

It's in the 1936 movie Born to Dance co-starring Eleanor Powell. Stewart dances, too. He's no Fred Astaire, but he's not bad for an amateur. I think it'd be easier to dance a bit than to sing, especially if you can't carry a tune in a bucket in the first place.  |

Most anyone can learn to master some basic dance steps, but to become an accomplished singer requires natural talent, training in proper breath support and phrasing, and it also helps if you can read music. The natural talent is essential. You either have a voice or you don't. (See Citizen Kane.  ) |
