I love this film and thought I'd share some trivia....
This was the first film to have nominations for Best Supporting Actor/Actress.
This was the only film (so far anyway) to have nominations for Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, best director and best screenplay to not have a nomination for best picture.
And, it's the only film to have all of the above nominations and NOT win a single Academy Award!
When he was offered the role of "Godfrey," William Powell said that the perfect person to play "Irene" was his ex-wife, Carole Lombard. They'd been divorced for 3 years when they made this film, but had remained friends.
My favorite Powell/Lombard trivia....they lived together before their marriage (which must've been pretty scandalous). After their marriage, they had a honeymoon. The next morning, Carole sent telegrams to their friends that read, "Nothing new to report." ;D

This is the same Carole Lombard who liked to tell people that Clark Gable was a lousy lover.

LOL ;D I had a great thread about her on my old board, I wish I'd saved my notes. I'll have to do a new one....

I love "My Man Godfrey" as well. I have read that Carole Lombard was often noted for calling a spade a spade in the nicest way of course. Two stories I have heard of her. When she was making "We're Not Dressing" with Bing Crosby they were staying at a very genteel boarding house. One morning she came downstairs and saw some elderly ladies in the dining room so she yells across at Bing Crosby "Oh Bing - did I leave my underwear in your room last night?" Another story . Cary Grant had gone on holidays - she lived next door. So just before he came back she sneaked in and cleaned out his kitchen of food. (I think he had the reputation of being stingey).
