I watched "Let 'Em Have It" (1935), a cheapie sounding title, but a whale of a good show, in the same vein as the same year's "G-Men", and in some regards even better! It's about government agents, first being hired and trained, then going after criminals wanted for major crimes. Of course, there's romance along the way, broken romance along the same path, then found-again romance, etc. This was produced by Edward Small Productions as Reliance Pictures, but distributed by United Artists. Directed by the wonderful director Sam Wood, this one's heads and tails better than most of the ilk.
This one stars a fabulous line-up, too, headed by Richard Arlen and the sexiest Virginia Bruce I've ever seen! Alice Brady, Harvey Stephens, Eric Linden, Joyce Compton, Gordon Jones, J. Farrell MacDonald, Bodil Rosing, Barbara Pepper, and many, many more make up the rest of the cast, although I've purposely left out two whom I need to mention: first, Matthew Betz, a face to most without a known name, a face that almost always is on the wrong side of the law; here he's definitely a bad guy, and he's great at it, too! Secondly, the baddie of this piece is Bruce Cabot, and you can see why he was hired often to play such thugs. He's just rotten down to the core, from the beginning to the end, and he plays the part so that the viewer can almost feel the rot!
I'd never heard of this, but I found a really good Sony release, having read some wonderful reviews and being a fan of both Richard Arlen and Virginia Bruce. It's much better than a lot of gangster pictures with bigger names like Cagney, Raft, and Bogart, and they're my favorites in the genre.
Highly recommended - but be aware that those who only know Virginia Bruce as a nice looking, even hinting at exotic, actress - will here be shocked at how sultry she could be. I couldn't keep my eyes off of her. Plus, the lady can act! All in all, a great evening.
