I dug this great film from the late forties out of my VHS collection to copy it to a DVD+RW, and after watching it while duping it I realized how wonderful a movie this really was. The story was perfect, and the cast headed by the wonderful William Powell and a young, enchanting Ann Blyth in the title roles. Irene Hervey was the understanding Mrs. Peabody and Fred Clark was his irrepressible self in this very unique fantasy-comedy. Question: Anyone know if this is on DVD yet? They are really missing the boat on this one if it isn't. I have searched a couple of my sources and found nothing, but I thought maybe someone here would be able to tell me for sure whether or not this classic film is on DVD.

I don't know, but of course, I'm not familiar with this movie either. What is it about?

Here's a synopsis of the film: As told to a psychiatrist: Mr. Peabody, middle-aged Bostonian on vacation with his wife in the Caribbean, hears mysterious, wordless singing on an uninhabited rock in the bay. Fishing in the vicinity, he catches...a mermaid. He takes her home and, though she has no spoken language, falls in love with her. Of course, his wife won't believe that thing in the bathtub is anything but a large fish. Predictable complications follow in rather tame fashion. Written by Rod Crawford {puffinus@u.washington.edu) Hope that explains it. Very good movie. And also very funny. William Powell is in top form in this film.

This sounds like a film TC would like if there's any way of "catching" it (yes, pun intended! ).

I saw Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid for the one and only time about 27 years ago. It is a delightful movie. I don't understand why it has fallen into obscurity. As far as I can tell, it has never been available on DVD except in a Region 2 (European format) release from Spain. However, there are VHS copies for sale on e-Bay.
The Tom Hanks-Daryl Hannah comedy hit Splash also starred a mermaid. The plots are nothing similar, but I am guessing that the scripwriters probably got some inspiration from the 1948 version.
