Last night late I watched a wonderful "B" Western, "Border Devils" (1932), with Harry Carey, Sr. and George F. "Gabby" Hayes. Kathleen Collins, Niles Welsh, and Olive Fuller Golden (the last named here Harry Carey's real life wife) round out cast. Albert J. Smith, Merrill McCormick, Art Mix, Tetsu Komai, and Jack Gallagher are some of the other players.
Because this was directed by William Nigh this "B" was good watching. Because Harry Carey, Sr. was the star this was wonderful to see. Because the main character actor was the infamous scene stealer "Gabby" Hayes, this was more than delightful. There wasn't a single thing in this film that hasn't been seen ten thousand times before, and possibly better done. But with the magnificent scenery and the charisma of the main stars - and that in spades - this one was a total delight. The wonderful dialogue between Carey and Hayes was great. (Only in the "B"s!!) Not one wink or nod off to sleep, even though it was quite late for me. Even Margaret was awake at the end! And this was a Western!
Definitely worth the watch if you're a Western fan and it doesn't have to be a grade A production. Some actors and actresses of another era didn't need the MTV blow-up set-up to make get-up git up!

A Western with all the cliches in the book, and even Margaret stayed awake? Now that's a serious recommendation if I ever heard one! Sounds like a fun movie. I am not a Westerns fan and seldom watch them unless there is someone really notable in the cast. Those B movies can be a lot of fun because they weren't trying to create a work of art, they were made strictly for entertainment. ""Didn't need to the MTV blow-up set to make get-up git up," you have a way with words!
