Well, now Hollywood has really shown how low they can go when they have to dig up a classic film from the 50's to remake. It has been announced that they are remaking THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, the classic film from the 50's that starred Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal. In the new version scheduled for release in summer of 2008 they have cast Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, and Jenniffer Connely in the Patricia Neal role. No word yet on who is going to be Gort, or if they are going to CGI the giant robot. This is really dumb that Hollywood has lost their originality and have dug up a classic that they will probably ruin. Last year when Paramount announced they were remaking "Shane", it stirred up a petition, which I am proud to say had my signature on it, and Paramount received so much negative mail they shelved the idea. Maybe we can do the same with this film. They have remade and ruined "Cheaper By The Dozen", "Dr. Doolittle", "The Longest Yard" and oh, so many more, why can't they just leave well enough alone and let the classics sleep. ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

I third that motion, Bill! Some movies can't be improved on, and this is one of them. You're so right, these pointless remakes demonstrate the complete lack of creativity in Hollywood these days. It's not about filmmaking anymore, it's all about making a big return on your investment with a sure thing. Where can we sign the petition?

They don't have new ideas anymore. Well, that is to say, they do, but the new ideas don't get enough room. There is sequel after sequel, remake after remake, and as soon as a book becomes popular they get hold of it and make a halfhearted film to cash in on the vogue. *Sigh*.
I think The Day The Earth Stood Still is very much of the 50's... I mean, it's great movie, but its message is basically that we should live in a kind of police state, giving up our freedom. Mind you, Klaatu had a point, it seems like we can't learn how to control our behavior by ourselves.
Actually, it might be interesting to see what kind of political spin they will put on this new version.
