If you remember the first movie to introduce us to the character of 'John Rambo' - "First Blood" - then you will need no introduction to this film. It is just as violent, and graphic, as either of it's three previous films, and for a guy in his 60's Stallone looks to be in great shape.
According to him, in a recent interview on 'David Letterman', Stallone did over 90% of his own stunts in this film, and paid the price with lots of scratches, bruises, and other body damage.
The film is co-written by Sylvester Stallone and Directed by Stallone. The music is newly-produced and updated from the first two films, and the hauting theme of "Rambo" is ever present, but not overbearing.
Rambo is a 'cobra snake wrangler' in the jungles of Thailand, when he is approached by a group of missionaries headed by Julie Benz. They want John to take them into Burma, where a war among the radical armies and local citizens has been going on for over 60 years. Rambo refuses telling them "you can't change them, go home!". They refuse to leave and Rambo finally relents and takes them upriver to Burma.
After river pirates sidetrack them, and Rambo has to dispatch them in his own violent way, he gets the missionaries to their drop off point and leaves.
We see the missionaries doing their job in a little village that is soon overrun by the marauding rebel armies and everyone is violently killed, beheaded, or whatever and the six missionaries are captured.
A pastor from the church where these missionaries came from shows up on Rambo's doorstep begging him to take a rescue mission of mercenary soldiers to where he dropped the last group at. Again Rambo says no, until he is told that 'the girl' is still alive.
From there it is very minimal dialogue and Stallone doing what he does best. This time he is not alone, he has a rag-tag bunch of mercenary soldiers to help him rescue the doomed missionaries.
A great action film, wrapped up in a nice little time of 93 minutes. If you like your movies with no CG effects, and lots of body parts flying across the screen, and you enjoy the exploits of John Rambo, then this movie is for you. I will say it is really a guy movie - in the audience of almost 200 I don't think I saw but a handful of females. It was guys, and they cheered throughout the movie and applauded at the end with the 'complete circle' resolution of the end of Rambo's exploits.
I will give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars.
