We have two, but we seldom use them.
What are you doing this weekend?

I'm looking forward to watching football on TV including Sunderland v the mighty Arsenal. Do you have a Scrabble set?

If you are talking about the game "Scrabble", yes we do.
Why don't you buy movies that you like?
Post by Midge on Sept 20, 2010 3:05:00 GMT -6
It's because I have only watched a few of my DVDs more than once, so it doesn't seem worth it to keep buying them when all they do is take up space. Besides, they keep changing the format, and then you have to replace your whole collection anyway.
How many cookbooks do you have?
Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 20, 2010 9:42:43 GMT -6
We have eleven different cookbooks in the house. Three are mine and are diabetic cookbooks with some really great recipes. We do have that huge Betty Crocker cookbook that everyone usually has at one time or another.
How often do you use your cookbook for a recipe?

Post by annavandenhazel on Sept 20, 2010 13:45:55 GMT -6
Which cookbook? ANd unlike Bill I have no idea how many I own, but it's more than 11. How often I use them varies, depending on when I have time to prepare a proper meal instead a meal that's boxed, frozen, or canned (not home canning). Do you keep a box of recipes?
Post by Midge on Sept 20, 2010 14:20:29 GMT -6
Yes, I have four boxes of recipe cards, including two that were my mother's. I also have a three-ring binder stuffed with recipes clipped from newspapers and magazines; recipes I've printed out; etc.
If you could go back in time and give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 22, 2010 7:27:00 GMT -6
"Do it the same way all over again"!!!
What piece of advice did you not listen to growing up?
Post by annavandenhazel on Sept 22, 2010 8:27:10 GMT -6
I don't know - I was pretty much well behaved, so if there was any advice I was given that I didn't pay attention to I don't remember what it was. While growing up, did you ever take advice from peers that turned out to be good?
Post by Roger Thornhill on Sept 24, 2010 10:26:32 GMT -6
Not from peers but I did take advice from other people.
Have you ever ski-jumped ?

No, I've never been on skis.
Have you ever been snowboarding?

No, I don't think I'd like it.
What was your favorite sport or game to play when you were a child?
Post by annavandenhazel on Sept 25, 2010 10:23:49 GMT -6
Baseball - sort of. Wasn't much of a game with only me and my youngest brother, and sometimes my cousin Don (who was later a Little League umpire), but he lived 85 miles away so we didn't see him very much. The pitcher was also baseman (yes, we had 3 bases) and outfielder, and the batter was also the catcher.

Have you painted anything in the last few weeks ?

Only my fingernails. Do you have a lot of books?

Post by rmichaelpyle on Sept 29, 2010 6:03:46 GMT -6
Yes. I recently re-modeled the bottom of the home and built a new library. I sold off over 2,500 books and now have about 10,000. It's not only my passion (besides my wife of 38 years), but some would say it's me. "You can tell a man by his books" is true sometimes.
Do you have a library in your home?

Post by Midge on Sept 29, 2010 23:46:08 GMT -6
Yes, our spare bedroom has been turned into a office-slash-library with bookshelves covering two of the four walls. We "only" have about 1,200 books, though, and some of those are in storage.
What was the last movie you bought?

Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 30, 2010 7:19:09 GMT -6
Just yesterday I picked up from Criterion Charade (1963) on Blu-ray. What a wonderful transfer they have made of this really remarkable film. Starring Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau and James Coburn, this ranks up there among my favorite movies.
Do you buy things on impulse, or do you only shop for what you really need?

Post by annavandenhazel on Sept 30, 2010 13:05:52 GMT -6
Depends on how much money I have. I try to stick with what's on the list, but when I see a good deal on something we use often (like Hamburger Helper for a dollar) I go into "Food Storage Mode" and buy several even if we're not out of it yet. Do you enjoy shopping for clothing?

No, I don't enjoy it at all. It's not fun when you're 5' 2" with nonstandard measurements - too short for regular sizes, too large-framed for petite sizes, but not heavy enough for plus sizes. Have you ever had something really bad happen at a party you were attending?

Hmmmm - there was that time I threw up at a small dinner party (about 12 people) for students in our Home Study Seminary class at church (I can't eat peppers, and a really yummy casserole had some that were chopped up so tiny I didn't know they were there) but I don't remember anything worse than that.
FYI Seminary is a daily scripture class for LDS high school students. In Utah it's offered as part of each school's cirriculum (in a separate little building next door to the high school), but in most other places a class is held at church early in the morning, or "home study" for those like me who lived too far from the chapel and met with our teacher once a week in the evening.
Do you plan to go back to school sometime?
Post by Midge on Oct 1, 2010 14:28:10 GMT -6
"Plan" might be too strong a word. I was a college dropout who went back to school in my 40's but only made it part way through my junior year of college at San Francisco State University.
I am retired now and have the time to finish my degree, but our state is so strapped for funds that SFSU suspended all new admissions last fall. I feel that if I went back to school I might be preventing a young student from getting into the classes he or she needs to graduate. I am also enjoying being retired and not having any demands on my time. But yes, I would like to go back to school. Education such a rewarding experience when you are finally mature enough to fully appreciate it.
Have you ever taken a class that you didn't need just for the fun of it or because you were curious about the subject?

Yes - high school sewing class
Did you ever take a class that sounded fun but turned out to be horrible?
Post by Midge on Oct 3, 2010 18:22:15 GMT -6
Yes, when I took German 1A at our local community college I had a wonderful teacher and the class was such a joy that I hated for it to end. After that I was eagerly anticipating taking 1B. Unfortunately the instructor this time was eccentric, disorganized and just plain bizarre in her teaching methods. I felt uncomfortable with her right away and should have followed my instinct and dropped the class. Instead I stuck it out and was completely miserable.
What sports team (if any) are following this season?
Post by annavandenhazel on Oct 4, 2010 9:17:15 GMT -6
None, I don't pay attention to any of it. Besides, if I dared to like a team different than my husband's ever-changing opinions I'd get to hear twice as much cursing. Do you have a favorite sports team?

No, the last sports event I attended was a Giants game in 2001. The tickets were for September 12, but because of the World Trade Center tragedy the game was postponed for one week. As we entered the stadium, everyone was given an miniature American flag and a candle. There was a procession of mounted police and firefighters onto the field, then a local church choir led the audience in singing "God Bless America" before the game. It was very moving.
When is the last time you went trick-or-treating?
Post by annavandenhazel on Oct 5, 2010 8:16:49 GMT -6
I went trick or treating twice: At age 7 with a friend, where we walked down a couple of streets collecting candy in the traditional way, then when I was in 6th grade my youngest brother insisted he wanted to go trick-or-treating, so my parents drove us to the homes of a few selected friends and took the time to visit with them - one lady wouldn't let her daughters give us candy because she knew John couldn't eat it (a decision my parents made after he was diagnosed with muscular distrophy) - why did she think we were in costume and carrying trick-or-treat bags? What little candy we collected was pooled together once we got home, and John only ate the safe candy like "Bit-O-Honey" - How anyone can eat those is beyond me, even back then they were murder on my teeth!
Will you be going trick-or-treating with children/grandchildren this year?

No trick-or-treating for me.
