Yes, and I am hoping to get a day of skiing in next month when my stepsister and I travel to Lake Tahoe.

Most people like my choice of movies when they are visiting our home. With my collection of over 6,000 titles, there is a lot to choose from. :jump: :jump:
What was your last purchase at a Garage Sale?

Post by Midge on Feb 19, 2011 17:27:45 GMT -6
Oh, my gosh, I haven't been to a garage sale since the 1970's! I bought a clunky, suitcase-like portable record player. That's how long ago it was. Now I use E-Bay, but garage sales are more fun.
What was the last thing you bought at a garage sale or on E-Bay?

I was helping a gentleman set up his tables at four-family garage sale and one of the boxes broke apart while I moving it from the truck to the table and about 300 45RPM records were scattered all over the floor. While gathering them up I noticed some of them were quite rare and asked how much he was going to sell them for, and he just gave me the box of records for my help. About two weeks later at another garage sale, I made about $250 on the records I wanted to sell. Never used e-Bay since I don't shop on line.
What was your finest treasure-find at a flea market or garage sale?

I found a record album from the 1950's that I remembered from my childhood and never thought I'd see again.
What is the greatest treasure you have found at a flea market or garage sale?

I seldom go to garage sales and haven't attended a flea market since my Camp Fire Girls troup had a game booth at one in 1973. But when my co-workers and I were returning from a conference in Albuquerque, the other lady besides me wanted to stop at an antique store, and there was a yard sale next door which we also visited. I was the only one who bought anything, a "Precious Moments" book with sound for 10 cents which became a Christmas gift for a nephew. I wonder what the folks running the sale thought, 5 people show up and all they get is a dime? Have you ever sold anything at a flea market?

It's been a while. I used to have a regular table at a local flea market and used to make some good money. Then they raised the rent on the table space and I bowed out and haven't been back.
Do you a list of treasures you have been looking for for a long time?

Not exactly, but for the past few years I have been looking on line and on craigslist for replacements for a gold ring and a pair of gold earrings that I lost.
Have you ever unexpectedly found an item that you thought was lost forever?

Several times - the weirdest was a couple of years ago when I lost a bottle of insulin - I tore the house apart and finally concluded it must have fallen in the trash, and had to pay $75.00 to replace it (the normal co-pay is $20.00). 3 weeks later my husband was looking for something in the hall linen closet, and pulled out a mysterious box, which contained some yarn I'd received as a gift but hadn't actually looked at for months, and the bottle of insulin fell out! What's even weirder is that the yarn happened to be just what somebody in one of my knitting groups was looking for, so 2 people benefited from my husband's find. And yes, the insulin was still good - in fact it was more potent than the stuff that had been properly refrigerated the whole time.
Have you ever set an item down in your home for just a minute and never saw it again?

It seems that way sometimes, but Al has an uncanny way of finding items that I've misplaced. I don't know how he does it. What's on your "things to do" list?

Knitting - I have 2 unfinished projects floating around the house and I keep getting sidetracked.
Do you have anything interesting planned for this weekend?

Not really, unless you consider going to a movie and working out at the gym "interesting." What are you doing this weekend?

This weekend my wife and I are going to hear The Vienna Boys Choir at a new venue near our home.
Is the weather in your area as volatile as it is here in Indianapolis? (To give you some indication of what I mean: last night the tornado air-raid siren went off four times (!), although luckily the only tornados were up north of us about fifty miles. The temperature was 63 degrees at 2:30 this morning, but it's only 33 right now, and there are snow flakes in the air. The reason I say "volatile" is because last night it rained over 6 inches here!! Not snow, rain!!)

I don't know if volatile is the right word, but the weather can't seem to make up it's mind here. Nice clear skies one day, snowstorm or rain the next. Maybe "schizophrenic" is more appropriate. Do you typically spend most of your work time in a vehicle?

No, I'm retired now, but when I was an employee I spent most of my working hours in a TV control room or in the studio.
Do you like to take long car trips?

Yes! It's the best way to visit relatives without the expense of flying, plus you can travel at your own pace and not somebody else's schedule.
Do you enjoy train rides?

I haven't been on a train for years but weirdly, last night, there was an advertisement about seeing Canada and the Rocky Mountains by train and it looked spectacular - just beautiful. Another "to do" to put on our list - when we win the lottery.
When was the last time you went to a school fete?

Does a Christmas party on the last day of German class count? What was the last classic movie you saw, and what did you think of it?

"A Christmas Carol" starring Alistair Sim was the classic movie we watched after Christmas. We love this movie and watch it more than just once a year.
Do you own more movies on DVD or Blu-ray than you do on VHS tape?

No, we still have mostly VHS videos, although most haven't been watched in a long time.
Have you ever owned Beta video equipment?

Yes, I had an early "piano key" Betamax with the wired remote. I liked it better than VHS.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

I can remember one of the first "conversations" I ever had on Larry's Diner concerned "Ice Cream" and my favourite flavour hasn't changed. It's Liquorice Swirl - it's just come back on the list of flavours at the local dairy, although the other week I had a rather nice one. It was called Cherry Jubilee!!!
What was one of the first TV programs you can remember watching?

The first thing I remember are the cartoon programs that used to be shown on local TV stations. One of them was hosted by "Sheriff John" who wore a cowboy hat and star, and another by "Engineer Bill" who dressed as a railroad engineer.
What was your favorite TV program when you were a child?

Post by annavandenhazel on Mar 7, 2011 10:18:55 GMT -6
Midge, I remember a couple of morning programs like that in Eugene. The ABC station had "Mr. Fixit" who wore an outfit with a vertical-striped shirt and a hat with a bunch of things stuck to it (not sure now whether they were small tools, fishing lures, or something else), and the NBC station had "Captain Shipwreck" who wore a captain's hat and a rugby-striped shirt (Apparently hats and stripes made good costumes).
Portland's independent channel (since evolved into a FOX channel) had an after-school program called "Ramblin' Rod". He didn't wear a costume, but he had a large audience of children and talked to them between cartoons. I only saw that program if I happened to be at my grandparents' house at the right time.
The 2 Eugene cartoon hosts didn't have big audiences like Ramblin' Rod, usually small groups of children and sometimes none at all.
Now back to the game:
The earliest program I remember liking best was The Flintstones.
What is your favorite television program of all time?

Anna, I enjoyed your reminiscences about early kids' TV! Favorite show of all time? Oh, gosh, that's impossible to answer. Based on number of times I've watched the reruns, I'd have to say I Love Lucy. What TV show do you wish would come back?

Hard to decide between Beverly Hillbillies or Petticoat Junction. Green Acres was OK but I didn't like how they made everyone Oliver & Lisa Douglas associated with look stupid/ignorant, even the ones who seemed to have normal intelligence on PJ.
In your opinion, what is the worst TV program you've see recently?

Again it's hard to choose because there are so many worthless TV shows out there. I'll say Saturday Night Live, because it used to be funny and it just isn't any more. If you could spend the day as a celebrity of your choice, who would you be?

I have no idea - I was hoping somebody else would answer this question so you'd get a better answer. If you were a celebrity, what would be the biggest thing you'd spend money on?
