I have never taken dance lessons other than the basic ballroom dance steps (foxtrot, etc.) that we learned in 7th grade gym class. I really never learned to dance at all, but I can fake it if I have to.
Have you ever taken any type of lessons?

When I was eight years old, I was watching "Make Believe Ballroom" starring Al Jarvis and Betty White (yes, the same Betty White that is still making us laugh today) and entered a contest for free accordion lessons. I didn't realize that it was a come on and everyone that sent their name in was chosen to learn the accordion and later appear on the 'Ballroom' show. I was pretty good after about a year, and I entered several talent contests at local service clubs and even won a couple of them. For eight years I played the accordion and one day I came home from school with it, put it in the closet and never went back.
Do you have any hidden talents?

Yes, I can read and write backwards and upside down. If you call that a "talent." What hidden talents do you have?

I entertain my grandkids with my impersonations of Donald Duck (yes, after all these years I can still do that annoying sound), Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Sylvester Cat, Tweety Pie, and if I try very hard I can do Mr. Magoo. I showed those talents off ONE time at an Eagles Lodge Talent Show when I was about thirty years old, and have never done it in public again.
Can you think of one thing you always wanted to do, but now in your Golden Years, you won't try.

Yes, probably tap dancing because I think I am a little too old (and too heavy) to start now.
What won't you do any more because you think you're too old?

Ride my regular 10-speed bicycle. I think that I would probably run over something that could lead to a very painful injury. The only bike-riding I do now is on a stationary recumbent bike at the gym.
Do you remember "Pick-up Stix", the game?

Post by Midge on Oct 12, 2013 16:48:43 GMT -6
Yes, I remember that. Games were a lot simpler when we were kids!
Did you ever have a Mr. Potato Head or the game Cootie?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 13, 2013 8:49:27 GMT -6
We still have Mr. Potato Head though it has gone through many changes in its life. And the game "Cootie" is still in our stack of games, and the grand kids are just now starting to learn about it. "Toy Story" brought a new interest in Mr. Potato Head for the kids.
Have you seen the commercial for Geico Insurance where Old MacDonald can't spell 'cow'?

Yes, I have. It's hilarious! I love when he says, "Dag nab it!"
Is there a TV commercial that gets on your last nerve?

The commercial that got "old" really quick was the Subway Sandwich where they are talking like it's the guys first born child and turns out to be the latest Subway Pulled Pork Sandwich. There are others, but that one is at the top of my list for now.
Is there a television show that has worn out its welcome in your household?

I used to watch Sister Wives, but now I find these people and all their little dramas to be annoying. This is despite a family connection. My cousin Frank owns the company which built the four new houses the Brown family moved into last December, and he also appeared in one episode of the show.
What television shows do you wish would go away and never come back?

Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 15, 2013 7:13:54 GMT -6
Top of my list is Big Brother, 19 Kids and Counting, (sorry about that one}, Survivor, (host of this show Jeff Probst lives in Wichita and has said many times 'this is the last season', but as we know it is still going. Don't know who or why people watch this show anymore), Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Sister Wives, The Biggest Loser, (the biggest loser is anyone who watches this show), Toddlers and Tiaras, Glee, and there are so many more, but these are at the top of my list.
What are some of your favorite television shows, you watch regularly?

I love the Lawrence Welk reruns that air on Saturday nights on PBS. I also watch The Little Couple, Mystery Diagnosis, Tales of the E.R., 19 Kids and Counting (sorry, Bill!) Late Night with David Letterman and various local news programs. Other than these, there aren't any network shows that I follow regularly.
Do you miss Johnny Carson?

Yes!!! The "Tonight Show" has never been the same without him. I thought he was brilliant, topical, and very very funny. There is a new book out about him that doesn't paint a very good picture of him, and I won't buy it because I have my own memories of him through his appearances on television.
What television show host do you miss the most?

Other than The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, I think I miss the original Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack the most. It's still on one of the cable channels, but with a different host, and it's just not the same.

I miss "Dial" bar soap in their many different colors. Also "Coast" bar soap used to be available in gold, blue, and plain white. Miss those quite a bit. Haven't seen a Zag Nut candy bar since we moved to Kansas. Don't know if that is a Kansas thing or did they quit making Zag Nut candy bars?
Good question, let's see your answer.

Yes, I miss Postum (it was resurrected by a small company and can be mail-ordered, but it's expensive now). I also miss a brand of Peanut Butter called Sorrell's Pickard that had a touch of vanilla and cinnamon in it. I miss Kellogg's OKs cereal, which was like Cheerios only shaped like Xs and Os, and I thought they tasted better than Cheerios. I also miss Clorets gum, Sunshine Raisin Biscuits, Hydrox cookies and Regal Crown sour candies.
Time and money permitting, what places would you like to visit again?

I would love to be able to go back to France and show my family where I used to work when I stationed there in the US Army. I still have some pictures, but it would be nice to see how it all might have changed since I was there in the early 60's. I also would like to go to Mount Rushmore once more time just to refresh those memories I have of it when I was driving a tour bus.
I'm not lazy, I just like this question:

I'd like to go back to Europe so I could appreciate it more than I did when I was 22.
If you could trade lives with any famous living person, who would you like to be?

I would like to trade places and lifestyles with Director James Cameron. He has been under the ocean to see the "Titanic" in its resting place. He has made some really good movies, and he has traveled the world more than once. I think I could get used to that lifestyle.
Have you ever been on a Napa Valley winery tour?

Yes, I have done that, but it was a long time ago.
Have you ever toured any type of factory or manufacturing plant?

Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 21, 2013 7:36:45 GMT -6
Yes. We have a company here in Wichita that makes roller coasters for the whole world. They are called Chance, and along with roller coasters they are also contracted to make handicap-access busses. We have taken the tour several times in the almost 14 years we have been here. Each time was truly different. We once got to be the guinea pigs and be the first passengers on a new roller coaster that was being tested before being shipped to an amusement park in Oregon. That was truly a very memorable tour.
Have you ever toured a brewery (Busch Gardens, or something like that)?

Post by Midge on Oct 21, 2013 16:47:29 GMT -6
Yes, I have toured the old Henry Weinhardt brewery in Portland, Oregon (which has since relocated out of town). The neighborhood used to be mainly industrial and smelled like hops because of the brewery. Now it's all yuppified with condos, restaurants and boutiques.
Do you like beer?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 22, 2013 7:00:26 GMT -6
NO!!!! I have never acquired the taste of beer of any type, nor have I acquired a taste for alcoholic beverages in all my 73 years. I can count the number of mixed drinks I have had in my life on the fingers of one hand. Don't understand what the big thing is about drinking beer or alcohol-based drinks. For New Year's Eve it has always been 'room temperature' Dr. Pepper with a slice of Pineapple in it as my drink of choice.
What are your preferances when it comes to social drinking?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Oct 22, 2013 17:00:48 GMT -6
I am a wine drinker, and my favorite wines are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Champagne. I don't like beer that much but will drink it occasionally. It's good with Chinese food and other spicy ethnic food. The only mixed drinks I really like are Margaritas with Mexican food. My favorite soft drinks are iced tea, lemonade and ginger ale. But I also like Dr. Pepper!
Do you like trains?

|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 23, 2013 7:18:55 GMT -6
Yes. I like model trains and have a "G" scale train that we set up every Christmas around the tree. I have only ridden a train once, and that was treat for my birthday in 1999 when my brother took me on a steam-engine pulled train from Sacramento up to a "Y" turnaround just before we got to Red Bluff, CA. It was the most fun I have ever had, and my love for trains has really come the full circle as I now have a friend who is a photographer and we go out several times a year to "chase" trains and photograph them.
Good question: Do you like trains?

Yes, I do. Al's father worked for Southern Pacific, so he is somewhat of a railroad buff and has quite a few books on the subject.
Have you ever used the closed captions on your TV?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 24, 2013 9:04:50 GMT -6
Not in recent years. When we still lived in California we had a friend who was very much what you would call 'hearing' impaired. And I think he is the only one we have ever used closed captions offer on our television for.
Is your HDTV a 'smart' TV (has internet connection) or just a regular HDTV?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Oct 24, 2013 17:23:18 GMT -6
The TV has that capability, and we bought the "dongle" attachment to connect it wirelessly, but we can't get the connection to work. So right now, no.
Do you have a smart TV?

|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Oct 25, 2013 7:48:27 GMT -6
Yes and No! The television upstairs is a 60" Vizio 'Smart' HDTV and my son-in-law has a streaming subscription to both Netflix and TargetTicket. The television has the ability to make the user be able to read his e-mail without interrupting the picture (sort of picture in picture). With all the 'techno-goodies' my son-in-law doesn't have to leave his chair for anything. My HDTV is a little different. It is an LG 50" HDTV, and only has direct connections to Vudu, Netflix, and YouTube. My Blu-ray player, however, is a "smart" Blu-ray player and I can get anything I want through it. Song offers FREE movies every month, and that is nothing short of great, very rarely do they offer a bad movie. Through our Cox Communications Contour 6, we are able to record up to six shows at one time (haven't done that yet, although the other day we had five shows recording at the same time. We have access to thousands of movies, sporting events and more through our On Demand network, and for the most part it is free with our subscription to Cox Cable.
Do you ever watch pay-per-view events (movies, sports) on your HDTV?
