We are planning a trip to the Weaubleau Motel in Weaubleau, Missouri, to see Ron and Sandy Cruse. We are saving our money now and hope that we can get there before it gets to hot. We are planning a three-day two-night stay. Not taking the grand kids this time.

I would love to visit Capitola, a small beach resort town which is on the coast near Santa Cruz. My grandmother had a cabin right on Soquel Creek with a small rowboat that we kids would take out on the creek, or we would swim, fish for trout and feed the ducks. There was also a nice little beach and an amusement arcade with Skee Ball and other games. I had so many happy summer vacations there. The house was sold after Grandma died, but it still exists and there's another house nearby that you can rent by the night. I would love to do that, if I could ever talk Al into it. Capitola doesn't have the happy associations for him that it does for me.
What are some of your happiest summer childhood memories?

One of the rules in our house, when I was growing up, was don't make any plans for the weekend without consulting mom and dad first. It seems like we always did "family" things on the weekend, whether it was a trip to the beach, to the roller rink, to the Zoo, it was always something different each week. When I became a teenager, and had a girlfriend, she was always invited along with us on our little weekend adventures. After Disneyland opened up, it was a total different story. Each of us kids had certain chores to do to earn an 'allowance' so that we could go to Disneyland once a month. Those were the days, and I hope my kids and grand kids can say the same thing in years to come.

My favorite kind of pie is Granny Smith Apple Pie. And Beverly knows just how to make them.
Do you like Pie a La Mode or just plain?

Just plain is fine with me.
Can you skip a stone?

Post by dvdjunkie on Jun 8, 2013 10:56:18 GMT -6
Haven't tried that in many years. We don't get out to many places that have water. Skipping stones was a lot of fun when I was younger, and I was pretty good at it.
Can you still do a cartwheel?

Whaddaya mean, "Still do a cartwheel?" I could never do a cartwheel, not even when I was a kid!
When was the last time you bought yourself something new to wear?

During the NCAA College basketball playoffs I bought a "Fear the Wheat" Wichita State Shockers T-shirt. Actually first thing I have purchased for myself in many years. With all the weight I am losing I have a lot of clothes that I haven't worn for four or five years, so I am happily losing weight so I can try on my "new" wardrobe.
When was the last time you went out for a meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner)?

Congratulations on your weight loss, Bill! Last Friday night Al and I took his friend Bill out to dinner at The Gold Mirror, one of our favorite Italian restaurants.
What did you order the last time you went out to eat?

Brunswick Stew, a small Brisket sandwich, and iced tea. It was at one of our favorite BBQ restaurants here in Wichita, "When Pigs Fly". Great food, and probably the best barbecue in the State of Kansas.

Yes, you can see the Pacific Ocean from my backyard and from the bathroom window (fog permitting, of course ). What is the nearest body of water from where you live?

Gulf of Mexico. That's where most of the summer extreme weather comes from April to June in the midwest.

My favorite thing to do is go to a county fair, especially if they have a fireworks show.

Basically it's the usual things other people do. We go to Wichita Wingnuts baseball games, have lots of cookouts, lots of family time going to parks (Wichita has 78 of them) so the grand kids can play and burn off some energy. Most of the things we do, we do as a family, and we really have a lot of fun.
Do you have any plans for the 4th of July weekend?

Post by Midge on Jun 15, 2013 15:41:11 GMT -6
No plans. Al doesn't like to go to fireworks shows, so we'll watch the festivities on TV instead. I always enjoy the Washington, D.C. celebration on PBS, and we have a local fireworks show as well but our famous summer fog is a constant threat. San Francisco has to have two different fireworks shows ready to go: One that's the standard type; one that's low-altitude in case of fog. We never know whether the fog will come in until the last minute. I will probably make a traditional picnic-style meal of hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob and baked beans. What are you doing on the 4th of July? (I'm waiting for Jeff to chime in and say "nothing, it's not a holiday here." )

We have a great baseball team called the Wichita Wingnuts and tradition is for us to go as a family to the ballgame, and stay in our seats after the game for ringside seats to the Fireworks on the River show. The fireworks are set to music recorded by the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and they are wonderful. The best 30 minutes of entertainment, and best of all it is free, except for the ball game and that is only $5 per adult and kids under 12 with an adult are free.
Okay, Jeff, what are you planning for the 4th of July Holiday weekend?

After three days of "cool" 80 degree temps we are looking forward to upper 90's and even triple digit high temperatures for the next five days, with no rain in sight. Lows at nighttime will be in the lower 70's.
Do you have a favorite place to hike or walk around these summer days?

Yes, Mt. Davidson Park, and it's right across the street from my house. The view from the top of the mountain is amazing, and a thick canopy of eucalyptus, pine and juniper trees keeps it cool while you are hiking to the top. What are your favorite walks?

Me? A walk around the block does me in nowadays. When we lived in California in Woodland, there were some great walking paths between Woodland and Davis. Then Woodland joined civilization and put up County Fair Mall and all but wiped out the trail to and from Davis, which was just under nine miles. I loved walking that trail because of the trees, and cool air even during the warm summer months.
Have you ever been to Santa Maria during a "Grunion Run"? (They are little fish that come ashore with the tide.)

No I have stopped in Santa Maria briefly (on drives from Northern to Southern California) but have never been there during the grunion run. We love Davis, by the way. Great little town!

My stepmother drove a '53 Ford when Dad first met her. I think it was a Tudor, though. My best friend Margaret drives a '94 Ford Contour.
Yes, since I retired I have been attending the Buchser High School All-Class Picnic every summer. The school existed only from 1959 to 1981, so it's not a big group.
Have you been to any of your class reunions?

Yes. The last one I went to was our Class of '58 40-Year Reunion. I attended Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California and our class size was just under 900 students. Needless to say the graduation ceremony took a very long time and I am always glad that it was held indoors. I have been to Class Reunions for my Fifth, Tenth, Twentieth, Thirtieth and my 40th Year Class Reunion, which was held on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
