No, I've never owned a boat. I've rowed a boat, gone sailing a few times and have ridden on ferries, but in general I'm not a boat person.
Do you like boating?

Yes, because I like being out on the water. No, because it is very expensive to own a boat. You can own a car free and clear for what you pay for a boat.

It was about 40 hours, when I was very ill with an undiagnosed thyroid problem that caused extreme anxiety. When I could sleep at all, it was only for 2-3 hours at a time. It was then that I first came to realize, on a personal level, how it feels to be tortured by such constant agony that suicide would seem like a logical solution. It was that bad.

When I was in the projectionist union (Local 262) in Sacramento, we had a six-screen drive-in that went down in the middle of the evening's shows, and three of us were called in to get this problem fixed ASAP. Since I was the "motorcycle" king of the group, I made three trips to San Francisco in a 24-hour period of time to get needed parts that we couldn't wait to be sent Special Delivery. When all the dust had cleared, we had all been up almost 38 hours, and we drew straws to see who got to leave first, and I got the winning draw and went home. I slept from about 5:30 pm on Tuesday until almost three pm on Wednesday. Then it was back to work Wednesday night at the drive-in, my job.
Have you ever been to Film Festival?

Yes, though not recently. I have been to the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and the Noir Festival.

Here in Wichita, Kansas we have the Tallgrass Film Festival every October. It is four days of wonderful movies, and each year a star or director is awarded the Tallgrass Award for contributions to the industry. Over 40 movies, shorts and documentaries are shown in four different locations in town, and most are attended by one or more of those people involved in making the film, so they can participate in a "Q & A" session after the viewing.

I loved the documentary Cameraman: The Life & Work of Jack Cardiff. It's about cinematographer Jack Cardiff, who was responsible for the look of those classic Powell and Pressburger films like The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death and Black Narcissus. It was screened at the Mill Valley Film Festival a few years ago, but I don't think it's been widely distributed. TCM screens it once in a while.
Do you know of any obscure movies that you'd like to recommend?

There are two of my favorites that you always read me talking about - "The Crimson Pirate" starring Burt Lancaster (which screened on TCM last weekend, and "Ruckus" starring Ben Johnson and Linda Blair, and was filmed in Yolo Count, California, specifically Woodland and the City of Yolo. Neither shows on television very regularly, but I own the DVD's of these two films and they get watched pretty regularly.

No, we don't have any of that new-fangled technology stuff. All we have is an ancient VCR. We could get a cable box with DVR, but the cable company would raise our rates, and they're already too high ($160 a month for one TV!)
When is the last time you went out for breakfast?

Wednesday morning we went out as a family to our favorite Diner, which has also been featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives", Brint's Diner. Everything there is made from scratch, and they use farm-fresh eggs and make their own sausage. My favorite breakfast is the "Ultimate Platter" for only $7.05. It consists of chopped ham, celantro, celery, potatoes, red peppers, scrambled eggs, and more, topped with a nice helping of corned beef hash and a side of three pancakes, made from scratch.

Yes, it's a cafe in Noe Valley called Chloe's, and they make the most incredible pancakes. They have a different pancake special every day, such as blueberry, banana walnut, cranberry, fresh corn or Swedish oatmeal. I also like their croissant French toast with strawberries and their scrambled egg specials with whole wheat walnut toast and a fruit cup. The restaurant only has nine tables, so it's best to go at off hours and avoid weekends because there will always be a wait.
How was your Fourth of July?

|
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 6, 2013 8:26:50 GMT -6
We had a very quiet Fourth. Our son-in-law Tim took Tymber, our five-year-old grand daughter on her first Off-Road Adventure, and from all reports she is having a blast with her Daddy. Traci, our daughter, took Zach, who will be nine in just a few weeks, to Kansas City for his first roller coaster ride at Worlds of Fun, and they returned home late last night. Beverly and I just babysat this huge home we live in and enjoyed the lack of hustle and bustle for a couple of days. Tim and Tymber will be home late Sunday afternoon.
Was your Fourth of July celebration different from any years past?

Post by Midge on Jul 6, 2013 16:13:59 GMT -6
No, it was the same. The only thing different is that the weather was a little nicer. Usually it's chilly and foggy on the Fourth, but for a change it was fairly mild and the fog stayed off the coast. We had jumbo hot dogs, corn on the cob and homemade potato salad and watched the fireworks shows on TV. There were also quite a few illegal fireworks shows going on in our part of town which we could see from our deck.

Actually three weeks ago. I flew with friends to San Francisco for a political rally against the current regime in D.C. Quite an interesting three days for me, since it didn't cost me a dime, except for the snack on the plane.

Nowadays we travel by car as Al refuses to fly. He's very tall, and the seats are uncomfortable for him.

Went to Chik-fil-A for morning Story Time with Kid Cow yesterday, and took a picture of the person in the costume of a young cow with the grand kids. Chik-fil-A has this Story Time every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. and Kid Cow's 'handler' reads from a very large 'pop-up' book. It has been a fun summer for us and the two grand kids. They love hearing stories that they are unfamiliar with.

Out of my DVD collection it was probably "The Crimson Pirate" starring Burt Lancaster. I always watch it when TCM shows it, and when I want to watch a good, fun, action film I can slip it into my DVD player and watch it any time of day or night. Other than that one film, "The Thin Man" film series is my favorite of the 'classics' that are shown on TCM.

Are you a side sleeper, a back sleeper or a tummy sleeper?

Since I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine to sleep I have become a very good back sleeper. I get my eight hours of sleep every night and thank my CPAP machine each and every day.
Do you sleep better with a window open or closed?

Closed windows are the only way to go in San Francisco because it gets very cool at night, not to mention that our bedroom faces the street.
Do you think George Zimmerman should be found guilty or not guilty?

Not guilty. But I am not looking forward to what is going to happen with a verdict either way. Police and National Guard units are on high alert for the prospect of stupid people rioting over the verdict. This is a situation that needs to be controlled before it happens.

"The Andy Griffith Show" was among my Top Three shows along with "Batman" with Adam West and Burt Ward (only because I was an extra in two of the episodes). The Mayberry RFD clan was such a charming a real show, you almost felt like your were peeking into someone's life story.

Do you have an oldies radio station in your area?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 18, 2013 7:15:37 GMT -6
Yes. Here in Wichita we have two, and both have their good days and their bad days. For some reason KEYN thinks that anything older than Motown music will not get listeners. They consider oldies from 1972 to 1985 to be the "true oldies but goodies". Our other station BOB-FM, is a satellite programmed oldies station and they play everything from the 60's to the late 80's, but they have days where they don't play the original recordings by the original artists and that drives me crazy.
Where do you listen to the radio most?
