At the breakfast table or in the car (Bill, I share your concern about oldies stations not being what they used to be. Here we can hardly get anything earlier than the Seventies. And I hate remakes!)
How are you keeping cool in the summer heat wave?

Right now we got a surprise from the East with four days of rain and today is supposed to be sunny with a high temp of near 100 degrees. We try to get any shopping we need to do out of the way early and then either go to the "Y" with the grand kids or just hibernate in the air conditioning of our new home.
Have you or did you ever call in 'sick' from your job just because you didn't feel like going to work?

Yes, but only once, when I was a secretary/receptionist for a Madison Avenue ad agency. I was 21 years old and had just moved into my first apartment. I wanted a day off to settle in and enjoy my new home. In my last job, I never called in sick unnecessarily (and sometimes even went to work when I wasn't feeling well) because the nature of the work was such that a person would have had to be called in to replace me. I didn't like being called in on my day off and wouldn't do that to someone else for frivolous reasons. Lots of my co-workers had no qualms about abusing the sick leave policy and would even brag about it, so my one regret is that I was too hard on myself.
Did you ever go to work when you should have stayed home?

Probably. When I worked here at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, I missed only one actual day of work in the five plus years I worked for them, and that was because I was had surgery on both feet and couldn't walk on them for 49 hours. I planned the surgery for Friday afternoon and I had Monday off, so my only day of lost work was Friday. When we lived in California, we were Mini-Storage managers for over 10 years so we never missed a day of work. Even on my worst days, I could go out on my time to clean a unit or to sweep a mess in the yard. It was nice being our own boss. As long as the money was collected for the units, and all the paperwork jibed with the deposits, we were never questioned about how we did the job. We were severely missed my the owners when we moved to Kansas. They still send us notes once in a while making us offers to come back to work for them.
Have you ever used a Mini-storage for your belongings?

Yes, when Al and I were first married and I moved into his small 1-bedroom apartment, I stored my excess belongings in a storage locker until we bought our house and had room for everything again.
Is there a candy or snack that is no longer made, and you wish it would come back?

I haven't seen a Bit-O-Honey candy bar in years. Don't know if they quit making them or they are only available in certain parts of the country. Also from the makers of Good & Plenty, there is a hard to find candy called Good & Fruity.
Is there something that you have always wanted to do, but haven't for various reaons?

Ooh, I love Bit-O-Honey and Good & Plenty!
Yes, I've always wanted to take piano lessons but it hasn't been practical for a number of reasons, having to buy a piano and haul it up the stairs being chief among them!
What is on your bucket list?

Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 22, 2013 7:00:31 GMT -6
My 'bucket list' is pretty complete. I think that if I can live until I am 90 might be a good thing, for me, but my current health might not let me do that. As of last Thursday, I am about 75% wheel chair bound, and going down hill slowly. The only thing on my bucket list that I haven't gotten to fulfill is to ride in a NASCAR car around the race track at speed. Otherwise I am a pretty happy camper.
Again, I repeat:
What is on your 'bucket list'?

Post by Midge on Jul 22, 2013 17:33:34 GMT -6
Bill, I'm sorry to hear about your health.
My bucket list will probably never happen for various reasons, but some of the things on it are to take piano lessons and tap dancing lessons, travel to Europe and the U.K., spend a few days at a vacation house on Soquel Creek in Capitola, and finish my Bachelor's Degree.
Who was the last person you talked to on the phone?

My nephew, Anthony, who lives in Sacramento, CA.
What was the last thing you did that you are proud of?

It's a little thing, I know, but I went to the gym last night and worked out even though I didn't feel like it.
Good question. What was the last thing you did that you are proud of?

My sounds just as little. This past weekend it was house-cleaning day, and my contribution was I cleaned all three toilets, all three tubs, and the one shower in our new house. After that I got out the mop and did the floors. It didn't take long, but I really felt good about it.
Do you have one thing you need to get accomplished before the summer weather is gone?
Post by Midge on Jul 24, 2013 16:43:49 GMT -6
A man who does housework! Will you marry me? Yes, I would like to clean and refinish the deck while the weather is nice, although the actual work will be done by Al, not me. Do you have any flowers or flowering bushes in your yard/garden?
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 25, 2013 7:43:45 GMT -6
Not at this time. We are busy 'turning' the soil, and getting rid of all the weed infestation that we found when we moved into this house, and hopefully by next year will have some very pretty flowers growing along side the walkway from the driveway to our front porch.
Do you have much yard work to do around your house?
Post by Midge on Jul 25, 2013 16:24:43 GMT -6
No, there's no front yard and the back yard is mostly cemented over. There are two bushes planted in front of the house and a flower box along the side of the fence in the back yard, and that's about it. It's just as well since I'm very bad at gardening and yard work.
Did you take a vitamin today?
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 26, 2013 8:51:23 GMT -6
Yes. One-A-Day Men's Health is the multi-vitamin my doctor said would be best for me, so I try to always do what the doctor says.
Do you have medications you take on a regular basis?
Post by Midge on Jul 26, 2013 16:13:34 GMT -6
Yes, I take three different medications daily and a fourth only as needed.
How many different medications do you take?
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 27, 2013 6:31:29 GMT -6
Four twice a day and three once a day (night time) and one as needed.
What is your favorite way to keep up on current events?
Post by Midge on Jul 27, 2013 17:59:10 GMT -6
I usually tune into CNN for breaking news (or MSNBC, one of the big three networks or Fox, depending on who seems to have the best coverage) or check the internet. I also like bbc.co.uk because they cover a lot of international news that American TV stations overlook. For local news I read the San Francisco Chronicle or their website, sfgate.com. I also listen to radio news when I'm having breakfast or when I'm driving in the car.
Where do you like to get your news?
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 28, 2013 6:59:15 GMT -6
My favorite television news if BBC America. My favorite other place to get the news is www.kansas.com, the home of the Wichita Eagle. And, like you I will watch a network newscast, preferably CBS News with Scott Pelley in the evening or Fox News during the day. I also listen to the radio while driving, when the grand kids let me. With the Summer season ending, what is the one thing on your 'to-do' list that hasn't gotten done?
Post by Midge on Jul 28, 2013 18:43:45 GMT -6
I've been putting off getting new carpeting, which we desperately need.
What's at the top of your to-do list?

Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 29, 2013 9:01:51 GMT -6
My son-in-law and I have the challenge of digging up a tree stump from the middle of the front yard. Someone before us has cut the tree down to about a two foot stump, and it just looks hideous now. We will probably dig around it and get down as far as we can, use the chain saw to help, and then get the Jeep on to the street in front of the stump and hope that we can get it pulled up safely. This has been at the top of our "to-do" list since we moved into the new home in April.
When you have a choice of doing something with "the girls" or just going out with your significant other, what is your choice?
Post by Midge on Jul 29, 2013 17:46:14 GMT -6
That's a tough question. I love both equally! But when it comes to going shopping, it's more fun to do that with "the girls."
What did you have for breakfast today?

Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 30, 2013 7:08:58 GMT -6
Multi-grain Cheerios, whole wheat toast, strawberry lemonade, and just because it was offered, a quarter of a Belgian Waffle. Guess lunch will be passed by today.
What did you have for dinner last night?
Post by Midge on Jul 30, 2013 16:26:53 GMT -6
It was a very simple meal because I can't cook very much right now. I sprained my ankle yesterday and have to stay off my foot as much as possible. Luckily there was a chicken pot pie in the freezer. We had that, and blueberries topped with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Can you sing any songs by heart?
Post by dvdjunkie on Jul 31, 2013 7:02:18 GMT -6
If you call what I do "singing", there is not a Beatles song that I don't know all the words by heart. There also is a lot of music from the 50's and 60's that I know all the words to. I sing in the shower, and make sure that the door is closed while I am doing so.
How about you - Can you sing any songs by heart?
Post by Midge on Aug 1, 2013 17:04:16 GMT -6
Yes, even a couple of Italian arias. I also remember the words to some old advertising jingles such as "Brylcreem, a little dab'll do ya/Brylcreem, you'll look so debonair/Brylcreem, the gals'll all pursue ya/They'll love to run their fingers through your hair!"
Have you ever gone roller skating or ice skating?
Post by dvdjunkie on Aug 2, 2013 8:29:25 GMT -6
Yes. But it has been many years ago. We take the grand kids to the skating rink here in Wichita and are amazed at what they can do on skates at this young age (5 and 8)!
When you watch any sport, do you know the rules to help make it easier to watch?
Post by Midge on Aug 2, 2013 16:48:55 GMT -6
No, I'm not good at learning rules. I know enough about baseball, though, to make it interesting, though I'm not up on some of the more arcane terms. I don't know what a "hanging slider" is, and I had to ask Al what a "walkoff run" was.
What sport are you most expert in?
Post by dvdjunkie on Aug 3, 2013 10:19:44 GMT -6
That's easy. Anything to do with NASCAR!!! I know all the drivers, what make of car they drive, where they are in the points standings, and I know their crew chiefs by name, also. If that is not dedication to a sport, I don't know what is. I love NASCAR and the 12 weeks between the end of November and the first of February are the longest of my life. So I have quite the DVD-R collection of the year's races that I watch during that 12 week period of time. It keeps me sane, plus I have edited out all the commercials so a race that is four hours long on television is less than three on the disc.
Do you have a "catch-all" drawer in your kitchen?
