Bill, thanks for the suggestion. I don't know if Coventry Advantra is available in Northern California as I've never heard of them, but I'll check into it.
What I remember most about my school days is how often we moved, and every time we moved, I'd have to change schools. By the time I graduated from high school, I had attended ten different schools and had changed schools 12 times. Naturally I don't remember the names of very many of my school friends or even the names of some of my teachers. I did very poorly in math as a result because mastering the skills requires some continuity, and I never had that. I also developed the bad habit of daydreaming in class because my attitude was Why bother paying attention when I may not be here for much longer?
Do you have any interesting memories of your school years?

Like you, my Dad was a school teacher and until he got tenure, we were moving almost every school year. He vowed that when I got to high school, we would never move again, and he kept that promise. My other 10 siblings have always thanked him for that.
Do you watch any game shows on television?

No, not any more. I used to like the late-night reruns of the old What's My Line, I've Got a Secret and To Tell the Truth on GSN, but they dropped the shows.
What game shows do you watch?

Our new favorite is "Cutthroat Kitchen" on Food Network on Sunday nights. Four chefs start with $25,000 and they use that money to ambush the other chefs who are trying to cook the assigned dish. It is so much fun, and it is never boring. The only other game show I may watch, but not regularly, is "Jeopardy".
What are your three favorite things to do outdoors (weather permitting)?

1. Go on a nature hike 2. Go for a walk on the beach 3. Ride my bicycle
How would you spend a perfect summer day, weather permitting?

Take my grandkids to the park.
Take the canoe and go to the lake for a picnic and on-the-lake outing.
Have a family barbecue and everyone sits at the table outdoors and enjoys their meal.
This summer has been very different than the past few summers. We only had three days of 100 degree plus temperatures. Our afternoons have been very pleasant, although a little more windy than usual, and our evenings have been gorgeous. We are now entering our 'Indian Summer' type of weather, and after such a wet summer (almost two-thirds of our average 25 inches of rain in the past six weeks) the farmers are welcoming the dry weather that is supposed to be around for most of the month of September.
Have you ever started a project, put it away, and come back to it after a long period of time has passed?

Yes, I've done that with my photo albums, both digital and paper. I have been working on editing them, organizing them and getting rid of photos I don't need to keep any more, but it's a huge task and I can only do a little at a time. I am also working on word-processing my favorite recipes.
What project haven't you finished yet?

I have an in-progress project alphabetizing my movies on DVD or Blu-ray in categoris such as Comedy, Musical, Drama, Action, Westerns, and so on. It seems that I am always changing my mind and then Windows comes up with a different way to do things and I am back to square one. Not being a technology geek, I do things in my own way, and have been told I could do it differently if I just down-loaded this or that website. It seems whenever I do that I get a worm in my computer and then I am without a computer for months at a time, because I can't afford to get another one, or get the one I have repaired. So I am very cautious about doing something that I know nothing about. This new computer I have had for just over a year and I don't want anything to happen to my work on this one, so I don't go anywhere on the internet that I haven't been before.
What's for dinner tonight?

Post by Midge on Aug 24, 2013 17:03:49 GMT -6
Tonight's dinner will be my usual Saturday night treat, turkey cheeseburgers with lettuce, tomato, sweet onion slices and my special "Big Mac" sauce. This will be served on toasted sesame whole wheat buns with a side order of sweet potato fries. Dessert will be lemon tart with sliced strawberries.
What did you have for dinner last night?

As a family we had my daughter's 'home-made-from-scratch' spaghetti. She started working on it Friday afternoon, and last night was the culmination of all her hard work, and it was delicious, as usual. She learned the recipe from her mom, my wife, Beverly, and adds a little touch of her own to the sauce.
Have yo0 ever gone out for a meal and not picked any particular restaurant, and then just stopped at one place because you liked the name or heard about it from a friend?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Aug 25, 2013 17:54:42 GMT -6
No, I pick my restaurants pretty carefully and go by online reviews or newspaper writeups. When we're traveling we will occasionally try a place based on how it looks on the outside and the menu that's on display, but we generally don't like to take chances because looks can be deceiving.
Is there something you do that doesn't make any sense but you keep doing it out of habit?

Post by dvdjunkie on Aug 25, 2013 18:48:05 GMT -6
I dunno. It could be an OCD thing, but each morning when I wake up and get dressed, after brushing my teeth and combing my hair, I always check my pants pockets to make sure that pennies are in the right pocket, and the silver change is in the left pocket. Oh, and my cell phone has to be in its little slot in my right pocket. Otherwise, I guess I am normal.
I like this question:
Is there something you do that doesn't make any sense but you keep doing it out of habit?

We got a new coffeemaker earlier this year with a thermal carafe instead of a glass one. The glass carafe had measuring marks on the side for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 cups. I used to fill the carafe from the tap up to the 6 cup line, and then I'd pour the water from the carafe into the reservoir. Now it makes more sense to fill the reservoir directly using a Pyrex measuring cup because the new carafe has no measuring marks. But I keep forgetting and putting water in the carafe the old way. Then I have to pour it out and start over. I wonder how long it will take this old dog to learn new tricks?

What's a GPS?? Just kidding. Wouldn't know how to make it work. Besides I read maps very well and have never gotten lost as long as I have a map of where I am going.

When I was asked to be a pall bearer at the funeral of my favorite stooge, Larry Fine. I don't remember all the details, but I know the funeral was delayed four days because I couldn't get the time off of work in Santa Barbara to come down to Los Angeles.
When someone asks you to meet them for lunch in a upscale restaurant, do you show up all dressed to the teeth, or do you just wear business casual?

Bill, I didn't know you were a pall bearer at Larry's funeral. What an honor!
I don't ever get dressed to the teeth because I'm not a fashion plate. Business casual is as good as it gets.
Was your mother a good cook?

Post by dvdjunkie on Aug 28, 2013 23:10:45 GMT -6
Oh yes!!! She cooked some of the best meals I can remember eating as a kid. And I believe that most of the meals were made from scratch. I remember coming home and seeing the pressure cooker on the stove and the aroma of Beef Stew. It was another day and a half before that was served for a meal. Yummy!!!
Where did you learn to cook?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Aug 29, 2013 3:08:23 GMT -6
I'm mostly self-taught. I learned a lot from the Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book (the one with the red and white plaid cover) and a few things from my stepmother, who wasn't very domestic but made great spaghetti. My own mother was a good cook, too, but she didn't raise me.
How old were you when you took your first drink, what was it, and did you like it?

|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Aug 29, 2013 8:39:26 GMT -6
Believe it or not, my first drink wasn't until the evening of my 21st birthday. My dad took me out and we went to this seedy little bar in Los Angeles, and I was really upset because they didn't ask for my I.D., which I was more than ready to show them. My drink was a rum and coke, and it was okay. I am not a drinker and I can count the number of alcoholic drinks I have had in my life on the fingers of one hand.
What time of day is the best for you to get things done around the house?

Post by Midge on Aug 29, 2013 17:53:40 GMT -6
The best time of day is any time that Al is out of the house. I usually wait until he goes out to vacuum or do any heavy housework. It's easier when I have the whole house to myself.

Just about anytime. I am a good house-husband, according to Beverly. I clean the bathrooms (we have three) from top to bottom including the toilet, and then I unload the dishwasher and put those dishes away. I am still not able to load the dishwasher correctly but I am encouraged by my daughter and my wife that what I do is really "quite enough".

It was one day last week when I was in the bathroom getting ready to go out to dinner. There I was, putting on makeup, styling my hair and spritzing on cologne, when Al appeared at the doorway. "Whatcha doin'?" he inquired. "Making myself presentable," I replied. To which he responded, in an incredulous tone, "You mean you're putting on a burqa?"
I won't tell you what my answer was, but it can't be printed here. Then we both burst out laughing.

Nope. You can't win if you don't play, and these days I can't afford to gamble my money away. I sometimes think I should look at the Powerball numbers each week, but then if my numbers should come up and I didn't buy a ticket, I would probably find a big, tall building and do a swan dive off the roof............Not really, I would be upset to not be able to win the money, but I have family and that is more than anything money can buy.

What is your favorite James Bond movie?

|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 2, 2013 10:49:42 GMT -6
Favorite James Bond is Sean Connery, and my favorite movie is "Goldfinger". Didn't care much for Roger Moore as James Bond, he just didn't look the part, and he was always making fun of himself it seems. Pierce Brosnan was my next favorite James Bond and my favorite movie of his is "The World Is Not Enough". The current James Bond is Daniel Craig, and I really like how Barbara Broccoli has gone back to the beginning with the character and brought us up to date on how he has evolved into being a "00" spy. The newest movie "Skyfall" is my favorite of Craig's. And he is signed to do at least two more movies.

What is your favorite Western movie?

I have two that I watch regularly. They are Shane starring Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur and Van Heflin, with a very evil Jack Palance making his film debut. Love this story, and I am so glad that Hollywood decided not to remake this western classic. My other film that I watch very often is 3:10 to Yuma starring Glenn Ford, Van Heflin (again!) and Richard Jaeckel as the evil Charlie Prince. This is one of the most tense two-person westerns ever made. The remake a few years ago told the same story, but had a few updates that I think detracted from the main story line. These are two of my all-time favorite film with High Noon, and The Big Country not to far behind. I like James Stewart westerns, and Audie Murphy, and from previous posts you know that I am a big Hopalong Cassidy fan.
