The original Stagecoach with John Wayne, Thomas Mitchell, Claire Trevor, Donald Meek and John Carradine is my favorite. Great story, well-told. I'm not a big John Wayne fan, but he was perfect as The RIngo Kid.
Are you left-handed, or do you know anyone who is?

I am as left-handed as you can get. When I broke my left elbow many years ago, I found out exactly how left-handed I was. I could hardly feed myself. I finally used a spoon for everything and since that time I have learned to use my right hand for a few things. But, I am still VERY left-handed, in almost everything I do from folding napkins, to folding clothes.
I like this question:
Are you left-handed, or do you know anyone who is?

Yes, I am left-handed, too -- and so is Al. I am fairly ambidextrous, though.
Do you like to watch vintage TV programs from the 50s and 60s? (We have one station that plays nothing but.)

Yes. With our new Cox Communication Contour system we have a channel called "The Hub", and they have most of the classic television shows from the 60's and 70's on in the evening. During the daytime hours they offer a whole of animated shows from the same period. It good to have an option, with all the crap that is purported to be "new and with it!".
Do you have a favorite board game that you liked to play when you were younger and wish you could play today?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Sept 10, 2013 4:22:15 GMT -6
No, because my favorite board game was Scrabble, and I can still play that today. I've even got a computer version of it.
What was your favorite board game when you were a kid?

Depends on how old of a kid we are talking about. I used to love Monopoly, Scrabble, and the like. I know it isn't a board game, but I loved 'Pick Up Stix' and could play that game with my sister for hours on end.
What was your favorite outdoor activity when you were a child?

I used to love swimming more than anything. I could spend hours in the pool or at the beach. Nowadays I'd prefer not to be seen in a bathing suit!
Have you tried any new restaurants lately?

We have a new BBQ restaurant in wichita, it is called "Bite Me", and as a family we went there Sunday afternoon, and found it to be a very family friendly restaurant with some really good barbecue offerings. I had a half-rack of baby back ribs that came with a butter-roll, corn on the cob, and fries. The ribs were yummy, and the price was well within the budget - $7.95 for my serving. Four adults and two kids and we got out of there for under $50, tip included.
Have you ever watched Diners, Drive-ins & Dives and said to yourself 'I want to have dinner there'??

Yes, lots of times. All the restaurants they feature have such tempting-looking food. Some of it is a bit over the top, though.
Have you ever made an international call?

Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 12, 2013 7:24:29 GMT -6
Not since the early 60's when I was stationed in Paris, France and called home in Los Angeles, California to talk to my future bride (the first wife) about setting the date for our wedding. It only cost me $7.25 for a six minute call, and the connection, as I remember, was really good.
Do you have a land line telephone as well as a cell phone?
|
|
|
Post by Midge on Sept 12, 2013 15:56:31 GMT -6
Yes, we have both. We also keep an old wired "banana phone" in the bedroom because when the power goes out, the wireless phone won't work.
Do you prefer to do some things the old-fashioned way?

When it comes to cooking certain breakfast food, the answer is yes. Everything else is 'roll with the flow'.
Do you have a meal planner that you try to follow each week?

No, I plan my meals one day at a time.
Did you listen to the radio today?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 13, 2013 19:28:34 GMT -6
No! I only listen to my radio when I am in the car. Don't have a radio in the house, that I know of.
How many hours a day is your television on, whether you are watching or not?

I'd say at least eight hours, because we're home all day and most evenings.
What was the last thing you watched on television?

Last night it was Bellator MMA Fight Night live from Temecula, California, on Spike TV. Season premier for my favorite Friday night entertainment for the next 13 weeks. And they will be live in Wichita, on October 11, my son-in-law and I have ringside tickets which were a gift from one of the fighters on the card that night, Dave "Cave Man" Rickles.
I think I already know the answer to this:
What was the last thing you watched on television?

Classic Arts Showcase, which is a commercial-free satellite service provided at no charge to broadcasters by a charitable foundation. Classic Arts Showcase provides 24 hours a day of brief video excerpts from symphony, opera, classic film, ballet, modern dance, art galleries, documentaries, etc. It's like MTV for culture. Its mission is to get people excited about the arts and to support the arts by attending cultural events in their own communities.
What famous person, living or dead, would you most like to meet in person?

I would like to have met Ronald Reagan when he was President. I got to interview his secretary for a radio station, when he was Governor of California, but never got to meet him personally.
Great question:
What famous person, living or dead, would you most like to meet in person?

I would like to meet the great operatic tenor Enrico Caruso. I've only heard him sing on those tinny old acoustic 78 records. I'd love to hear what he sounded like in person because everyone who ever saw him perform live said that his voice was unforgettable.
If you were given a 15-minute shopping spree to fill your cart with as much merchandise as it could hold at any store you choose, where would you go, and what items would you put in your cart?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 16, 2013 7:48:45 GMT -6
Best Buy!!! I would fill my cart with all the Blu-ray movie collections I could find, and then get a brand new "Smart" HDTV and new Blu-ray player to go along with it. I hate not having an expendable income anymore. Social Security is not a very livable situation. Am glad that we live with our daughter and son-in-law, otherwise we would be homeless or living in a cardboard box-type apartment.
Great idea Midge:

Since new kitchen appliances and a new car won't fit in my shopping cart, I would fill it up with non-perishable items at the grocery store and donate the items to our local food bank.
One of my favorite reality shows is Mystery Diagnosis on the Discovery Health Network. Have you or anyone in your family ever had a mysterious health problem that defied explanation and baffled the doctors?

Yes. At this time Beverly is going through tests to find out why she has hives. We have changed the bedding completely and have gotten new pillows, and made sure that her clothes are washed separately from everyone else. The doctors have tried changing her medications to see if that helps, and this has been going on for the last three months. Tomorrow she has a dermatology appointment to see what they tell her. We took her to emergency one night because it was so bad she couldn't sleep. The doctor there prescribed a short-term steroid that worked! She was without those pesky hives for almost five days. But since steroids are habit-forming, her doctor has now decided that dermatology might be able to help. I hope so.
With the new Fall television season starting in the next couple of weeks, do you have a favorite show that is returning that you watch on a regular basis?

Oh, dear, that sounds miserable. I hope Beverly will get some relief soon.
There are a couple of programmes I've been following, 19 Kids and Counting and Sister Wives.
Have you ever been stopped by a complete stranger who tells you that you look exactly like someone they know?

Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 18, 2013 7:40:23 GMT -6
Yes, but many years ago. Before I gained all this weight, Beverly and I were walking in one of malls in Sacramento, and this lady screamed from across the room and ran towards me, I wasn't sure what was happening, she stopped yelling, and handed me a little book with a pen and told me that I was her favorite actor. Huh!!! She then said "Mr. Devane would you please sign my autograph book". She thought I was William DeVane, which I thought was pretty funny. I signed her book and we were on our way. I had several people say I looked just Charlie Martin Smith, the actor who played Toad in "American Graffiti", but rarely was I mistaken for William DeVane (of Knot's Landing fame).
Have you ever been sitting in a food court at a mall and a complete stranger comes up to your table and starts talking to you like he has known you for years?

No, I haven't had that experience, but several times I have been approached by strangers who say that I look just like someone they know. Not a famous person, though!
Have you ever taken a train trip?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 19, 2013 7:53:58 GMT -6
Yes. When we lived in Sacramento my brother, Dennis, took me on a 'steam engine' pulled train trip that was only supposed to be three hours long, and because of some problems with tracks and some unscheduled traffic on the same rails, it turned into a six and a half hour trip. We went up north towards Redding to a little town called Keddy. Basically it is a railroad town where most of the trains stop to change crews. They have what is called a "Y" track there that allows trains to turn around by going up one track, then backing across the original track and then pulling forward to the original track. This is referred to by most train people as the "Keddy Y". The engine pulling us was the only working Steam Engine in its class, the Union Pacific 844, out of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Have you ever traveled by Greyhound Bus Lines?

Post by Midge on Sept 19, 2013 16:23:27 GMT -6
Yes, when I first moved to San Francisco at age 18 I didn't have a car, so I took the bus home to Santa Clara on weekends to see my family. I used to imagine that I was riding in a jet airplane, which at the time was something that I had never done.
Has anything strange or funny ever happened to you when you were traveling?

Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 20, 2013 10:48:54 GMT -6
Yes. Don't know exactly how funny it is, but at the time it happened we were laughing and screaming at the same time. When we first moved to Kansas in March of 2000 we were towing a 5x10 U-Haul trailer behind our Ford Contour. We also brought along two of our little dogs, one was a Dachshund/Terrior mis, and the other was a Bijon/Poodle mix. The little of the two rode in the back window, that seemed to be her favorite place. The other dog, OJ, rode on Bev's lap the whole way. We got stopped at a signal in Kingman, AZ and OJ bounded out the window, which was open, and Bev started screaming for him to come back, and by the time we got parked and took off looking for him, he comes prancing around the corner and when we looked there was a puddle around a pole, so we figured he had to go. We laugh about it now, but then we were very terrified that something was happening to our dog we had no control over.
Have you ever made plans to do something, and when the time came to do it, you decided against it?

Have you ever owned a pickup truck?
|
|
|
Post by dvdjunkie on Sept 21, 2013 8:13:29 GMT -6
Yep! When they were little trucks we owned a Ford Courier. It was diarhea green in color, and looked like someone had taken a ball-peen hammer to it all over. It had a little camper shell, and was held on by four C-clamps. Most dependable vehicle I ever owned until I got the car we have now, a Kia Sedona Mini-Van.
Have you ever owned one of those cars that people call a "tuna boat" (like the original size Cadillac, Lincoln Towncar, etc.)?
